Just upgraded my router

This is an archive of the mabination.com forums which were active from 2010 to 2018. You can not register, post or otherwise interact with the site other than browsing the content for historical purposes. The content is provided as-is, from the moment of the last backup taken of the database in 2019. I can put the biggest, fanciest router ever on my network and it won't boost my speed unless I upgrade my internet service.

Nah I didn't have AC on my old router plus speeds went from 80 to 120. Comcast never upgraded are service it was just because the router was old.

Many of us are used to thinking that the router is never the bottleneck in our Internet connection speeds, but this is often no longer the case, with Internet connection speeds surpassing 100 Mbps. Many routers don't have 1 Gbps ports and of those who do, many older models can't get 100 Mbps throughput.

Mine does too. Any wifi connection that doesn't belong to one of my devices or my wife's devices is given 128kb/s down 28kb/s up. Its a deterrent to stop the inlaws from coming over to update their things and lagging me out of the games I am playing.

Older routers usually only have 10/100 ports on them and won't exceed 10MB/s displayed transfer rate.

And yes, wifi is always slow. If you're moving more than a hundred megabytes or so, plug a cable in to a router's gigabit port. It'll go a LOT faster.

My wifi for local transfers goes around 20 MB/s so it's pretty tolerable. I hardly ever transfer any large files though, all my media is consumed by streaming, so I don't need to wait for a file to copy over.

I also do most of my stuff on my PC which is cabled anyways. Hardly ever use my laptop anymore when I'm at home. Tablet is taking over.
