When you don't feed your spirit weapon then you talk to them....

They've been made mostly useless but you can still get them.

To elaborate, they're pretty much outdated and forgotten. Awakening is pitifully weak since its damage only scales with rank and nothing else, and Spirit Weapon's stats are miniscule in comparison to, say Beam Swords. The only "updates" Spirit Weapons have ever had was just making more of them.
