  That being said, I wasn't trying to make light of the situation. I just can't be that surprised with the lack of regulations in China regarding safety and chemicals. I feel sorry for all the uninvolved people living nearby who suffered from the explosion.

  Unfortunate that so many people were injured or killed, but I see no point in ridiculing those who were filming it. They brought us information that we would otherwise probably not have. The scale of the explosion was unprecedented. It's not like they were retards who would walk up next to a burning building to film it up close.

  Nobody knows what chemical started the fire by the time fire fighters came in. They can't just use chemical extinguisher because it might make things worse. If I was a fire fighter, chem extinguisher wouldn't be my first choice either.

  Some reports claim the fire didn't even start in the warehouse. It started in a shipping container, and spread quickly throughout the port. The warehouse was just one of the bigger structures in the port to catch fire, and happened to contain chemicals that would react badly to getting wet.
  
  The firefighting material of choice for this fire would probably have been foam, but we do not know if the firefighters answering the call had access to such material or knowledge that the fire they were fighting would be better extinguished by using it. Foam sprays aren't exactly cheap to operate like a water hose is.

  Good firefighting operates on the principle of situational awareness, and knowing what was going on.
  
  And also should be informed of anything that might prevent standard fire fighting procedure. like happening to store hazardous materials.

  The information may not have been available to them. I can't imagine the Chinese being very forthcoming with information, even in this day and age. I'm sure that the people who were trying to put the fire out were doing the best they could do with the situation.

  Tianjin is a 2-2.5 hr drive from Beijing and a terrible place compared to Beijing.
