Every time I've tried to open Mabinogi, Hack Shield loads, then nothing happens. The cheat guard never pops up and the game doesn't start. In my NexonLauncher account, where Mabinogi is, it goes from "currently in-game" back to just the play button. I also downloaded Steam and re-downloaded Mabinogi, but it won't launch from there. I was just playing last night with no problems.
(And I'm not very computer-savvy, so please forgive me if I ask what you mean)
(Also, I'm using a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge with Windows 8.1)

Try running it as administrator (right click at Mabinogi Launcher and select run as administrator). But I wonder that would help, because Mabinogi already config to run as administrator by default (unless, it failed). I'm not using any Nexon Launcher and not using steam version (I just copy-paste from my old computer) and it's running without problem.
Anyway, I don't think it because Mabinogi itself. I think something make the Anti-cheat to not working properly (or hack shield?). One thing to do is to disable any anti-virus when launching Mabinogi to see if it help, if not it properly from the windows setting itself (or other program then anti-virus).
Also, you said that you can played it last night? That's mean something went wrong with your computer this morning. If you did DO something to your computer, try to undo it (like, install new program, install new driver etc.). If it still not helping, try to restart your computer. Maybe that can help (most of my game if it can't start the hack shield, just restart and it working again!!... sometime...).

Update: I restarted my computer, but this message appeared when I tried to start Mabinogi. What do I do with this?
The message reads:
We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience, but
an error has been detected with the Hackshield.
Error: An error has occurred while updating Hackshield. (Error Code : 0x3000ffff)
Error Code: 0x3000ffff
What does that mean?

The code 0x3000ffff is an error to corrupted Hshield files (from what I heard though). But from my google search resulted in mabinogi common error. Anyone who get this error was told to download new Client. But IDK if mabinogi can repair HShield on it own? You can try this by move the "HShield" folder outside of Mabinogi game folder and try start mabinogi again. If it can re-download Hshield, it should now be a problem. But if not, try to move .exe file back to HShield and start again. If you worries about corrupt the game files. You can make a back-up of the game somewhere else and try messing with HShield folder (or just download new one from nexon website since if this is true it would mean your installer is corrupted).
Most people who have this problem also get the game running sometime too. I still think it was another element that play in this error. Like some connection problem or program that messing around with your connection? IDK, but in my country they say that if you got problem with games not start, it would be 100% 'Baidu' Program that causing this (if you have one or two or a lot installed in your computer though).
PS. Not that I dislike Baidu, but some computer expert in my country try installed new windows and installed Baidu Anti Virus and use the computer. The computer don't even last 7 days of experiment (I think he said computer faster at day 1-2 of experiment but then suddenly slower at day 3 and then stop working at all about day 4)...

Well, the good news is I got it to work again! I messed with the files and searched solutions for hours before I finally tied my own solution, and it worked! What I did was open the DEP (Data Execution Prevention... I think) settings and add all .exe files in my mabinogi folder that I could, then I updated Hackshield one more time, then I restarted my computer. This time I had to wait a little before the game opened, but it did, and everything runs normal now!
Thank you so much for your help !

I'm having a same problem. Hackshield pops, NexonGuard doesn't. I've did system restore, moved programs in DEP, downloaded NexonGuard.aes, still can't get it to work.

Can you be more specific? Do you get error message? If you do please post it here and we will try to help you then.

No error message pops. After Hackshield opens, Client will run in the background for a bit then eTracer will open and nothing happens, I have to force shut them.
Also, if error message popped up, I would have solved it by now, since I've dealt with lots of error messages. Not that urgent since I'm in Korea right now anyway.

If you can solve that problems then you should be thinking about solving the problem you have right now ;>
Well anyway, are you on Windows 10? =D

No, I'm using Windows 8.
What I'm saying is I can't figure out the problem since it's the first time there's an error without the error message. Also doesn't help that I'm on a trip currently as well.

Well you are on a trip, but u can try this once u come back.
1. Go to Control Panel\System and Security\System.
2. Click on advance system settings.
3. Under the Performance Tab, go to settings again
4. Data Execution Prevention and Turn on "DEP for all programs and services except those I select"
5. Add both Mabinogi.exe and Client.exe too the list.

Woops sorry. I was paying attention XD Well I can't really tell what's wrong. My only suggestion would be reinstalling everything. Also it might be a cause of the graphic card, because as I read from other threads there was a problem with graphics. Basically Mabinogi doesn't detect some graphics card after latest patch, so all the we can do for now is wait until the problem is fix'd. I can't suggest anything else, because for me Mabinogi works fine on Windows 8. To be honest I encountered with people that had crazy problems with their client, but this one is hard to solve without getting any error info back.

I can't think of anything right now. The problem is not specific enough. But all I can tell is something may happen with your computer. If this is a first time running from this computer, it maybe graphic card issue. As far as I can tell, it did occur to me sometime but after I close it I can re-open it again so it wasn't your case. If you can open up to client.exe it most likely graphic card problem, or connection problem.
If you can find some VPN outside of korean (VPN in US etc.). I think you should try it. This may not help but I think it worth try it anyway. If you're using double graphic card (Integrated and External one), you may try to force using External graphic card. If not you may try to update your graphic card driver.
Lastly, if you can play before but now can't. It maybe windows or another program play in this issue. It may not help much but try disable anti-virus before starting the game may help.

Welp, thanks for all the help attempts I guess.
I was in Jejudo when I was having a problem. I came back to Seoul and now it's working fine, so I guess it has to do with location too.
