Maybe you're AFK at the moment the maintenance about to start. Because it'll be a warning message that they'll automatically log-out when maintenance start on the screen (stick on the screen until you click). And also a red message reminder every minute until maintenance start.
PS. My computer clock have 3 time zone, my time zone, Eastern and Pacific. Although, Nexon did notice both Pacific and Eastern timezone for maintenance. I only stick to Pacific at the moment (because it was easier to compare to my timezone).

Yeah I was afk at that moment, but I wish they actually said there is a maintenence when you try to login instead of just ''can't acess server'' which can give many misunderstandings like the fact something is up with your game or something.

Some game on NA did that.. and... you know... that result was still confusing. Why? Because when the connection was bad and cut off. It just report to you that server is on maintenance. In fact, it's not. Just my bad connection can cause me to wait about 10 hours and then I just realize something and find that 'Maintenance' notice... But didn't found one. When I wait 10 hours my friend still play normally... It was very anger me.
Also, PSO2 also report server maintenance when your connection can't reach server too. One of my friends got blocked from PSO2 JP server they said that the server say maintenance but other people can log-in. It take a about 3 hours to realize that they were blocked.
PS. Today I got that 'Double Log-in' for the first time (normally it'll tell you to make second password if you still log-in). I was just DC and someone log-in to my ID!? no... it just that log-in server and game server was not sync...

Still I think there is no problem in changing it to ''Maintenence in progress'' to ''Server can't be accesed'' when it discovers what type of DC you had. I mean some games actually do that and tell you there is a maintenance and if there isn't it tells you always a error code why you couldn't connect.
PS. For some reason multiple times I logged in and it asked me to make a secondary pin while I have already owned one so yeah...

Then you just missed my point. But, ok... you'll have to experience it first hand. Most of the game cannot figured out the server is maintenance or not. Because all they know is the server can't be access/down. And yes like I said, some game did that and... the result was still not that impress... you'll get 'Maintenance in progress' because your internet is really having problem. Lastly, being maintenance mean the server cannot be accessed. If you want the game to be more f**k up with error message... You may tell GM about this. They may do something for you.
For make a second password even you have one mean... Your ID is still logged-in... You just have to back-off a few second and try again. If you try to log-in like that. IIRC, the game will just said something like password is not correct? I can't remember because it took me long time to realize that this game error message is messing up.

next time you come across this issue, check the main web page because it might say there is maintenance.

In order for the game to know that the server is specifically in maint, something would need to respond to the game with the fact that it's in maint.
But during maint, part of the process is to restart the server (the machine itself for updates at times too), during which time it can't respond.
But shouldn't the launcher say something or at least grey out the play button last I checked?

It should do but for some reason it doesn't. Now I have a new problem... I just got disconnected and when I press play it says about not being able to connect to a SSO server whatever that is I went to the launcher after exiting Mabinogi and it says the connection with the launcher broke and to retry it and the retry button isn't even working... amazing launcher Nexon. Now due to nexon's stupidity I don't even know is the game down (since graying out a button on the launcher is too hard) or if it is a problem.

Check your connection to FTP Patch server. If you got disconnect and SSO error is most likely your connection have some problem.
The roundabout is to used VPN when start Launcher. Then disconnected and try to start game with normal connection. If it still SSO (or whatever is it I can't remember) error it's mean your connection have a problem with some protocol the game used. If it was personal internet try asking your ISP. If it was public internet you may try to used VPN to access server for the time being.
PS. My university internet blocked almost all protocol/FTP connection to game server too. It show the same error. So I think it was the same problem.
