Out of curiosity how often do you see wild tortoise in your area?
This wasn't in my area which makes it all the more special. I spotted it while I was hiking with a high school classmate I hadn't seen in 9 years. It was in California that I spotted it and I'm heading back home to New York State tomorrow.
Also I live in the city so getting to see anything awesome like this is very very rare for me. So everytime I come across a wild creature I've never seen before I treat it as an amazing and awesome experience that's worth getting excited about.
That being said, the quick research I did to try and identify this has led me to believe that hibernation for them begins next month and they are most active during Spring/Early Summer so to see them at this time of year is pretty rare.
