The proof is in the animation set/gestures. Quite a good number of NPC and mob transformations reveal a lot about themselves through those gestures.

As a matter of fact, some fishes are hermaphrodites. And it gets even more crazy with seahorses - the female one puts an ovipositor inside the male, pumping him full of her eggs.
