Avatar Pic choosing

use gimp is a tool you can cut the background away

might need be steady with mouse movement though

or theres the colour selector and wand tool but that might delete your characters hair

If the background is a solid colour, then just set the magic wand tolerance to like 0 and you won't have that problem.
