I don't know if Guild Wars 2 have been recommended or not. It is a MMORPG with a long history, and with a unique leveling system as well as quest system. Just about everything gives experience, and usually around a certain % of the experience bar. It encourages people to coop, but you can play solo at the same time. There are many classes with each with their different play-styles. Dungeons are pretty challenging. There are a lot of field bosses that requires cooperation, which people usually come to them.
There are actually a lot of people playing it. It doesn't really matter what server you choose because you can play with anyone. The difference is just some pvp starting point is different.
PvP content is completely separate from PvE in terms of zones and equipment.
Guild Wars is also ArenaNet only game series, and they are very passionate about it. So, they won't go and abandon it anytime soon like many companies who host many types of games.
Currently, it is free to play as well.

Did you fucking forget that YOU were the one to get me into eroge like I am now?
Tenshin is literally my first untranslated game based on your "recommendation".

PSO2, Guild Wars 2, and Tera are not bad and are MMORPGs with skill requirement.
With PSO2, If you speak Japanese fine, I recommend ship 9 over ship 2, for the less hectic/troll community, unless you have friends there. The combat is very fluid and action console-like. Super fun with a gamepad.
DFO and Elsword(preferably private servers) requires skill, but gets boring after awhile or without friends.
Second Life is not considered a game. It's social and artwork for me, but it does have some custom combat/game-systems. Clothing is ultra cheap(not even a dollar for most).
Toontown(rewritten) is actually worth trying if you haven't... Made for kids but fun for adults too if you like turn-based MMORPG with Mario Party style mini-games. No economy to mess up in this game.

I pretty much stuck to small limit of games, but when Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was newly around I was playing Toukiden, in which, is pretty much the same, but something about it got me more addicted to it and it's on the PS4 too? Maybe it's just the fun of breaking body parts.

Get yourself some console emulators (normal ds or prior) an emulate some good ol' Fire Emblem! (fe12 is awesome I really recommend it)
If subscriptions aren't a problem, then I would really recommend World of Warcraft. Not anime-styled, but its own style is lovely. All the different races and factions have their own building and clothing styles, the graphics are good both low-low end and high-high end... The gameplay is very well balanced compared to 90% of mmos where they only balance one class as a time, because WoW makes tweaks to a lot of things at once, rather than "okay this class is now the bomb for the next 6 months--have fun" It's not too terribly grindy until the endgame, and the story has a lot of fun moments, as well as the epic grand legends that are told through it. Well-strategized situations can have you clearing large groups like cutting cake, or you can be casual and fight enemies one on one. I don't know what else to say other than the only downside is the subscription part!
Or you could just come to Phantasy Star Online 2 and revel in the NOT SEA VERSION! We have cookies :D
