Ever wondered what an game anime from the perspective of a pker would be like? Check this one out. Overlord much like madhouse's another anime (OPM) aim to punch shounen trope in the dick.
Your protagonist is not a good guy, he is a pragmatist, he doesn't like needless killing but if there is something that will advance his organization or benefit himself, he will do it no matter how cruel. This is an epic anime where you see would be shounen tropes gets pimp slapped. Your supposedly powerful opponent? BAM one shotted, your group of friends with hopes and dreams? BAM gets owned. And the strange thing is, you will still end up rooting for the MC despite if it's another show he'd definitely be the villain.

I don't have a problem with overpowered protagonists. OPM is great, I like Mahouka a lot and even SAO was pretty enjoyable; all of the above either have some limitations or shift the focus out of comparing power levels. This show however, I couldn't stand. You describe it as some dramatic trope-breaker, but all I could see was a dejected yet overly sensitive guy who owns everything without even trying - this alone wouldn't be a problem were there anything else to it, preferably a storyline. It might be enjoyable as some kind of power fantasy fueled showcase of flashy battles though.
Oh, and the ending theme is pretty cool.

I say he tries harder than most to get things he want (and things he doesn't want but his followers think he wants). He is playing good cop bad cop as a one man show while managing Nazarick AND he had to practice his poker face because most of the time he doesn't even know wtf his followers are saying, yet he has to pretend he knew all along XD.
But I can see why people would dislike him because really he is evil. People get turn off by evil protagonists.

But he's not evil at all. Among all things shown in anime, the closest to actually bad was what he's done to Clementine and even then all of his opponents are clearly made out to be the real bad guys. And this "suddenly I can kill people without remorse because reasons" thing is a whole another problem, derived from common issues of "trapped in a game" scenarios.
If you want a solid new wave fantasy with morally questionable protagonist check Shieldbro (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari) - it has a real anti-hero and not a guy who's so evil that he runs around villages, helping people.

Why did you not just say Rising of the Shield Hero? lol Anyways Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Harem, Romance, Seinen are cool tags but I'm not sure about Harem...

That's because you haven't read the LN,
“「Ia Shub-Niggurath!ã€â€
A black wind blew toward the Kingdom’s army, which had just finished changing its formation.
Or rather, there was no wind. Nothing moved, from the weeds growing on the plains, or the hairs on the heads of the Kingdom’s soldiers.
There were 70'000 men in the left wing of the Kingdom’s army.
Every single one of them was killed on the spot.
What on earth happened?
Nobody could answer that question.
Every living creature that comprised the left wing of the Kingdom’s army —horses, conscripts, knights, nobles, everything— suddenly keeled over and collapsed on the ground like puppets whose strings had been cut.
The ones who realized the answer first were the Imperial troops, ranged against them.
It took a while for the human mind to properly parse the events that had just transpired. So after a short delay, as a terrible understanding dawned upon them, the Imperial army was gripped by shouts of panic.
After watching Ainz Ooal Gown deploy his magic circle, they had assumed that he was casting some sort of spell. That much they could understand.
However, who could have possibly imagined it?
Who could have imagined the horrific spell that had been cast here?
The spell that was cast had slain 70'000 people —more than the entire Imperial army— in an instant, utterly and completely snuffing their lives out.
Unable to believe their eyes, the Imperial knights prayed to whatever gods they believed in.
They prayed that the people of the Kingdom were not dead.
They prayed that such terrible magic did not exist in this world.
Of course, as they took in the truth before their eyes —that not a single person had stood back up from where they fell— they were fully aware that it was nothing but a childish hope.
Even so, there was no way they could accept it. There was no way they could accept this as fact.
The man hailed as one of the strongest in the Empire, one of the Four Knights, Nimble, could only stare in mute horror and grind his teeth in naked terror at the suddenly depopulated left wing of the Kingdom’s army.
Nobody stood back up. That was a reality which was far, far too horrible to accept.
But the awful truth could not be described with just these simple words.
Ainz Ooal Gown —this magic caster, all by himself— was a monster who was capable of taking on the nations forged by men and obliterating them in the way that a child would kick down a sandcastle.

I've been eyeing Overlord for a while, haven't had time because school and shit. I'm all for OP protagonists or sadistic people, it's just thrilling to see what they do to their enemies.

Most likely Demigure's farm (skin them, to make scroll then use heal magic to regrow flesh... etc etc)

As I watch this, the appeal begins to wane as it goes on. He's overpowered, sure, but he still tries to play by the rules the world has set out. I understand he can't headrush everything because he's trying to play it safe (though may be too safe), but I do respect when he admits his mistakes. In addition, I'm not really keen on filler characters; most of the Nazarick NPCs didn't do anything at all, and two mentioned weren't even shown.
Also how the fuck did a valkyrie-vampire of all things get brainwashed, when she's supposed to have a skill that negates brainwashing due to being undead and proved to be immensely powerful when she nearly put the protagonist in a corner? That doesn't stand right with me, even with this "OP item."
With that all said, one has to wonder though what if Ains didn't change Albedo's settings? How would the NPCs react if she was left as the "guild slut" and not "madly in love with Ains"?

yeah madhouse left out an important character trait, he is PARANOID. To the tinfoil hat level, at the beginning he was even suspicious of his followers. That's why he is playing this so carefully. Because he is paranoid that someone who is stronger is out and if he reveals himself he will lose XD Which isn't the case at all.
About Shaltear, again this is madhouse's fault. Here's what happened. "Slane Theocracy's strongest team - Black scripture was sent out for something unrelated to Shaltear's mission, but met Shaltear who was in blood frenzy (happens when you are a true vampire and got too much blood on you), and she attacked them. Black scripture has a world class item presumably left by their six gods who were also players. "The downfall of men and countries". This item being world class overwrites game mechanics unless opponent also possesses a world class item. Shaltear killed one of em, realize she was using the item to try to control her, she dashed in, mortally wounded the caster to forcefully shutdown the item effect. So the effect became half assed. Now instead of black scripture controlling her, she is set to hostile to everyone who approaches her. The black scripture tried and again was wounded. So they decide it's not worth it, and left her there. Ainz being the paranoid bastard he is, thought it was a trap and they knew who he was and this is a coordinated attack attempt to thwart him, whenn fact Slane Theocracy doesn't even know he exists.

I saw this anime as well and found it kind of interesting but don't like how it just stops. Feel like there's so much more that could keep going with a season 2 and beyond but no word on that happening yet, and I don't feel like reading the novel or manga.

Okay that explanation makes a whole lot more sense.
