It really does eat up a lot of time, especially if you are trying to get the relationships up and level up all your units. Just wait until Revelation. Seeing that, that route has characters from both Birthright and Conquest, I expect the amount of time you'll spend on it will be much higher.
I've been sitting on Chapter 18 for the past couple days as I've been working on 8 character relationships and trying to level up them up.
