Just binge-watched this on Netflix, now keeping up on the more recent ones via Crunchyroll. Definitely one of the best, if not the best, long-arc shonen series I've seen, mostly because it's not afraid to let a major character die once in awhile, and the fights are really well done.

I watched all of the anime but hated how it just ended even though the manga keeps going. I do have the manga on my server but did not get into it yet.
I enjoyed it a lot though, just found the insect arc long as hell. If I were watching it weekly I would have quit but since I had every episode it was fine.

From having followed the manga for so long, I feel like the series has some drops and recoveries in quality and tracking. You know how Dragon Ball became Dragon Ball Z and then the people that picked it up for GT tried to bring back the exploration and humor aspect of the first part? For me it seems like Hunter x Hunter swerved off track and then got put back on too.
Like...
- The series starts in some fantasy universe. It's wilderness everywhere, there's monsters, you use tracking skills, and they take tests to become worldwide explorers. The parts of civilization that are shown are still hella-fantasy. Transportation is boats or airships, locations are small villages or prison towers built to test your strength, etc. The series continued like this for a while with themes of discovery and learning in the fantasy universe, because the main character wants to be a Hunter to find a Hunter.
- Heavens Arena arc. Still fantasy-themed, but it starts going sort of DBZ-fashion here, moving away from the fantasy themes and exploration, onto inner strength training and all that jazz. It's still okay, if a little long for a detour, and getting a little too far from the exploration aspect.
- Yorknew City arc. This is the biggest point where the series swerved too far away from the initial ideas, I think. We started with a curious, strong boy who wants to hunt monsters and explore uncharted territory to find his dad. Now we're in the big city with the mafia. Cell phones and deals and double-crossing and all that jazz.
- Greed Island arc. I feel that the author realized how far off track he got, which is why this arc is suddenly (and forcefully) shoved back into a typical fantasy setting, complete with arbitrary magical rules/objects to figure out and deal with, enemies to figure out and fight, etc.
- Chimera Ant arc. I wasn't too fond of this because of how long it dragged on. It spent way too much time going off into side stories of side characters (don't know if they skipped any of it in the anime, but given that it's 61 episodes it looks like no). There were some pretty cool highlights, like the assassins coming in to help, interactions with Komugi, the Chairman's story of his life, etc. Still, this arc took double the time than a normal anime would take to tell a whole story.
- Election arc. I just wasn't really feeling it for this arc. It's not just that it was all politics and tying up loose ends, it's that so many things happened that didn't actually accomplish anything or progress the story because they'd be reverted or it turns out they were just messing around. It felt like the manga form of filler at times. I mean some interesting things happened, but there was more fluff than substance.
- Expedition arc. This seems like it may be interesting if they ever get around to actually having the boat ride, let alone the expedition after it. The latest chapters have the characters actually moving and stuff seems to be "Okay we're ready to do stuff now" so here's hoping.

The Chimera ant arc starts off pretty strong, but it definitely drags, especially when we get to the part where it takes seriously 3-4 episodes to cover one minute of actual time. The Gungi game and the sheer badasserry of the Chairman saves it though.

It's funny that this thread pops up and suddenly I get notices of tons of manga chapters for hxh being uploaded to manga sites, but unfortunately I think it's just revisions of older chapters.

At first I thought this was a manga/anime about Monster Hunter...

Whatever else can be said about the Chimera Ant arc, the ending seriously made me cry.
I honestly was hoping the king would live near the end, and that final scene between him and Komugi just killed me. Damn amazing characterization for the supposed "bad guys" of the series.
