Why can't I get into Ant Hell?

At this point, I have spent a few HOURS trying this. I have found DOZENS of these smoke clouds, and nothing. I went and got a Cold Wind L-Rod to try and dig down under the smoke, nothing. All that I've accomplished is gaining 10 levels in exploration and 50 points in blood pressure.

Took a bunch of screenshots of myself standing in half a dozen different clouds, but they're not showing up in my screenshot folder. Found this video on Youtube that shows exactly what (doesn't) happen when I find one:

It's a bug that's been around for years now. I myself haven't tried since making a return coupon for the place years ago after lots of trial & error. I have no idea if either you're having shitty luck since you've been trying for hours to no avail, or if it's become much harder to go into ant hell that way. Just know that it isn't just you this has been happening to.

Really? It's been going on for that long and they haven't fixed it yet? Gaaah, I just want to learn refining... maybe I can find someone to sell me the ores :/
