The best way of getting high protection is by having 5/5 upgrades on heavy armor, right?
I was just wondering because I want to have high protection to cover my low HP and tendency to be easily hit. :3

Best way, enchants, protection armour and Barrier Spikes master title.

If you want a Tank build, you're gonna wanna go for the Barrier Spikes title. +12% Protection ftw!~
Not only that, but yes, you will want a Heavy Armor for max Protection, along with other equips with high protection (highest right now is 1%). You'd also go for Protection enchants, like Colonel (Shields), Burgundy Bear (Iron weapons and Armor) and Life (on Tailcaps).
Blassreiter made a fantastic post on the Guru a long time ago. I have fetched it for ya:
Focused on Protection:
Helmet: Life (Vintage) Tail Cap for +2 Protection (Total +2 Protection)
Gloves: Dark Red Bear Valencia's Cross Line Plate Gauntlet made with +2 Protection (Total +3 Protection)
Boots: Dark Red Bear Spaika Silver Plate Boots/ Dark Red Bear Valencia's Cross Line Plate Boots (Total +2 Protection)
Armor: Imp Valencia's Cross Line Plate Armor upgraded to have 10 Protection (Total +12 Protection)
Shield: Any +2 protection Shield with Colonel Enchanted on it and uprgaded with max Heavy Stander (Total +4 Protection)
Title: Master of Protective Wall (+12 Protection)
Subtotal: 35% Protection, You now have similar Defense to a Bug Bear.
Add the Sprite pet (+1% Protection) and that G3 glove item (+2% difference, since it cannot be enchanted), and you'll have about 38% Protection.
Also, with this item set, you'll have lots of passive defense. :)
This is definitely for end-game tank purposes, of course.

So I'm guessing a Bug Bear has a lot of defense? O.o
That's hardcore defense. Lots of alchemy involved, which I'm currently bad at.
Also sounds expensive.
I think I'll stick with whatever looks best on my character like most people do. Relying on protection won't always work.
Thanks a bunch for the help!
What's a tailcap?
-
Phunkie wrote on 2010-09-11 11:58
Haha, just stick to some Protection on your Heavy Armor and some Defense as well, then.
And use Shields to decrease damage!
A Tailcap is one of those raccoon-tail-looking hats that are popular for carrying Stiff.

Screenhog wrote on 2010-09-11 12:28
Oh, okay. (I hate those hats)

Rose wrote on 2010-09-11 12:52
I hate them to, but i just use a hood =]
No one has ever seen me wearing a tail cap.
Ever.

I would rather have ~70 defense then ~35 protection, just because most monsters don't hit high enough to justify the protection.
For example, the above ratio needs 200 damage for protection to be better.

But you'll never get 35 prot without having at least 45 def anyways. I can have up to 39 prot but my def is still 50.
Also correction on the equips:
Sig valencia Gloves have 2/2
get Spika boots for 2/1
Try for a 7/5 dustin or at least 6/4 armor upgraded for prot thats 16/11 or 15/10 Refined Imp Enchants
Getting a Metal Helm (1/1) with Burg Bear prefix will get you more def but until they uncapp windblast you can't activate the +1 prot on that enchant.
Master of Barrier Spikes is pure win.
Gaurdian Colonel on Shield (unless your a mage then rigid is only -1 def and no mana loss)
Mana Shield To rank 6 + 300 int also increase your tankability to the max
Def skill to r1
Thats how you tank as Human/giant once you've reached level 1k
Before 1k most of the monsters you face (with exception to some hardmode normal dungeon ones) don't have the critical and don't hit for over 100 normally.
So before 1k I think you should focus on Def. Here is one way to do that.
Sig Valencia Gloves again Burgundy Bear Prefix + 2 Def
Spika Boots Burgundy Bear Prefix +3 def
Metal Helm (1/1) Burg bear Prefix + 2 def
7/5 or 6/4 armor upgraded to 17/8 or 16/7 Def Oak Tree +27/26 def
Shield Beholder/Dragon/Composite/Vales 7 Def on the upgrades Gardian enchanted +11 def (Golem is optional but not really recommended)
Master of Golems Title + 10 def
Def R1 + 15 def
Total Def is 66-68 Def and still good amount of prot on that you will also have passive def on melee hits from 15-20 giving a total of 81-88 def against melee opponents. In most dungeons you fight under 1k they will be doing single digits.
Now I realize you wont be able to get all of this done before 500 so just get the equips and build them as you go. Your going to sacrifice damage for all the def but most things wont even hurt so you could just trade blows with them over and over again.
Elf :Little Different
access - Tauris Enchanted 2/0 access for 3/3
Light Armor - Mint Pine Tree with a tailored 4/3 upgraded to 10/5 for total of 17/5
Chinese Dragon Gloves - Burg Bear enchanted for 3/1
Vito Crux/Long Greave Boots - Burg Bear enchanted for 2/1
1/1 Metal Helm- Burg Bear enchant for 2/1
Shield for melee/magic
Shield Beholder/Dragon/Composite/Vales 7 Def on the upgrades Gardian enchanted for 11/2 or 10/1
Total while wielding bow- 27/11
For magic/melee 37-38/12-13
not bad for you elfs plus still locations for +damage enchants.

Actually you only need 101 damage for protection to be better.
That's if you ignore the crit chance reduction and wound reduction which comes only on crit.
Most of the times its a 1:1 ratio on def/prot, so it wouldn't really be 70
or 35. There's just more ways to get defense.

But the 35 protection comes with defense, and reduces the chance of being hit with a critical. Having recently been normal hit crit for 424 dmg, I think I'd go for the 35 protection over 70 defense.
Armor: Imp Valencia's Cross Line Plate Armor upgraded to have 10 Protection (Total +12 Protection)
How is a heavy armor upgraded to have 10 protection? 2 + 6 = 8 is the best I see?
And, not to split hairs, but upgraded A+ clothing with 2 enchanted for protection accessories > +12 protection. Or was he counting the PD?

Wow, lots to know. o_o
I'm only lv 90 something.. I don't know where to start.
Getting a starlight robe and 2 black dyes. Then selling my white dyes and buying a brown dye.
Then getting a vintage starry wizard hat and getting another black dye and another brown dye.
Then focusing on that stuff. I wanna look good while doin it.
(In all that's like 2m and I don't know how to get that much)

2x Taurus accessories = +10 protection
Reactive Golem clothes = 3 + 5 + 3 (upgrade) + 2 (tailored) = +13 protection
Not very practical but I guess if you want to show off

You know this theres that wooden equip pnly enchant that gives like 5 protection alone (For gloves in this case, unless your tanking with wooden blades, in which case you sir are god tier) it gives 2 + 3 one of the boosts is for having a barrier up the other is like, rank 2 spikes or something.
