Looking for tear-jerking, sad animes to watch!
Already watched a few: 10 cm per second, air, clannad, kanon, tokyo magnitude 8.0, chrono crusade,... check my list: http://myanimelist.net/animelist/DearSky
Any recommendations welcome as long as it's really sad xD
Even J-Dramas~
Bit late.
Was going to recommended 5 CM Per Second, but you've already seen it. Have you seen The Placed Promised in Our Early Days? It's also by Makoto Shinkai and the art is equally as beautiful.

I can't believe that no one suggested Full moon wo Sagashite (Searching for Full moon) yet..
This was probably one of the greatest anime made ever.
It's the very first anime that made me cry back in 2003..
Also my recommended animes are; Chihayafuru, Sola, Angelbeats!, Gosick, Gungrave, Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~, Tiger & Bunny, Shounen Omnyouji, Legend of the legendary heroes, Garei Zero, Hana-saku no Iroha and lastly Steins;Gate.
Picked these out of 84 anime series in my hard drive, the fact that I cried after watching Gungrave is a secret(not).
As for manga; Garei (complete), Until Death Do Us Part, Tokyo ESP, Kami no Shizuku, and Usagi Drop (complete).

So with the forum growing older, it seems that (my) lack of updating the Anime and Manga List, everyone's thrust towards other forms of entertainment, and just the dive back into old school Anime, no has has been checking up on this Section of the Forum!
If anyone could of would like an updated list of High-Loght Anime Suggestions, please drop a message below.
And when it comes to suggestions, I will try my best to accommodate and reorganize it in an easier to understand fashion.
I hope to see a few posts that encourage this notion, as it is slightly better than scrolling through pages of filter for Anime and Manga series suggestions!

Surprised no one mentioned it, but "Gate-Thus the JSDF Fought There" is pretty good.

No Record of Lodoss war?
One of the grandfathers of the high fantasy anime genre!

Since there was a prompt for new life in this thread/board, I hope that this isn't particularly late.
Starting back from ~2009, we have:
- The iconic moe(blob) anime, K-On!
- Our fantastic commerce wolf and companion (or man and wolf?), Spice and Wolf
- Everyone's (!!) favourite Touhou doujin artist (+ bonus IOSYS opening theme), Yumekui Merry
- Fancy a romance involving a loli detective in a historical setting? Try Gosick
- An utterly silly mahou shounen (!?) chainsaw anime, Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?
- The Shaft specials, the "monogatari" series (Bakemonogatari, Nisemonogatari)
- One of the most discussed animes of the past few years, taking 3 of the top 4 Saimoe 2011 positions, Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
- And finally, the nice and lighthearted (for the most part) romcom, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!
I would personally recommend all of these (except for maybe KoreZom, since it didn't really suit my tastes). As for the "monogatari" series, I've only watched Bakemonogatari, and heard that Nisemonogatari is also pretty good (if pushing some societal norms). Not too sure about the other ones, though.
I could elaborate on these animes a bit more, or discuss some of the popular ones (that I haven't watched) and/or ones that are on my to-watch list (as well as what I've heard about them).
I figure I'll leave manga for a later date.

Sticky threads can't be necroed. Right. Right? (They're immortal after all.)
Anime/"anime-ish" cartoons:
Avatar: The last Airbender: fantasy/adventure/comedy/action mix. Martial arts/magic remix battle system. It got pretty quirky story telling, the plot is interesting too if somewhat clichee (save the world from evil heh). Complete.
Last Exile: sci-fi/adventure/slice-of-life somewhat. Two of the main characters are plain normal and grounded in life, until they get dragged into all those troubles. Yet they stay true to their plain normal selves. As long as you understand that you're gonna enjoy this. Complete.
Natsume Yuujinchou: supernatural/slice-of-life. This anime's emotional focus is on loneliness. How it is to not be able to trust your own kind any more. And finally it's about how to succeed at it again. The plot is about a "cat" and a human helping out spirits in need of assistance. Complete.
Nodame Cantabile: music/college/slice-of-life. After my best friend, anime and classical music fanatic, rejected this I got a bit unsure, but yes, I still like this! They are both wearing a mask - one a pokerface and the other plays the fool. They are both trying to avoid something. But what is it? Complete.
Hunter X Hunter: action/adventure. Nowadays innocent and straight-forward main characters are pretty OUT, they were famous in time of olden RPGs. I still say this is the shounen anime I enjoyed the most. Not a fan of the latest manga chapters though. Complete.

Manga:
Hikaru no Go - about connecting the past to the future and the board game GO.
Skip Beat - revenge show-biz comedy.
The Breaker - martial-arts drama.
Magi - one of the best modern shounen ever.
Petshop of Horrors - what's mysterious D's real aim? And why does he feel disturbed by this newcomer?
Psyren - a shounen I enjoyed.
Ares - intense plot and action, unique art style.
Home - somewhat historic romance about language barriers and love between cultures.

I just finished watching Bodacious Space Pirates. I was expecting some kind of ecchi anime when I got into it, but it ended up being perfectly clean, but really fun despite the lack of perverted things. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes pirates, space, and lasers.
We need more pirate animes.
