Don't worry, the robe will always be there with the same durability and everything (except for colour that you messed up with) even if you don't get the colour you want. You can dye as many times as you like.
Be very patient when dyeing your stuff. Sometimes you can get 4 or all 5 of the colours that you want. Just pick carefully because it is a percentage game. Picking 4 colours means you will land on any of the 4 colours that you want with an 80% chance. All 5 means you are very safe. It's rare to get all 5 that you want but it is possible.
If you have only 1 colour out of 5 chosen that you really want, you have only 20% chance of landing it. This is why you need to maximise the amount of chances you have with a dye ampule.
Usually for white and black (which I'm used to dyeing) I go with at least a 40% chance, but 60% is much safer.

Word of advice: If you're trying to get a specific color of a shade, it's best to buy a fixed dye due to the massive skyrocket of dye prices.
Furthermore, it's not impossible to get 4 blacks/whites on a dye palette (provided it's a cloth palette). From past experiences, it seems that Black is the easiest color to get. Since my theme color is a specific shade of purplish-blue, I use the fixed dye in most cases.
1 Color: Even a baby can do it
2 Colors: Very Easy
3 Colors: Relatively difficult, but only a bit of luck is needed
4 Colors: Exponentially difficult, but possible if the player is completely patient.
5 Colors: Yes, i've had this happen to me. Almost impossible through normal dyeing. You need pure luck at the right moment.
