First total face transplant performed in Spain - More health news- msnbc.com
This isn't a very heavily researched or studied area, so it probably won't advance as fast as people would like.
But give this field maybe 50 years or so, face transplants will probably be the next plastic surgery. Everyone will want prettier faces.

I hope the woman who got attacked by a chimp can get a transplant like this. I saw her face on Oprah and ... Yeah, it was just very depressing.

Whatever it is, it's disgusting to lose your face and get another person's face to be on it.
Hell, even if it's someone's face that you want, it's still disgusting.

There are two big problems.
1. The operation itself. You've got to remove whats left on that face to attach the new face, so you're damaging the face even more. Also, attaching the new face isn't exactly piecing together legos. There are lots of very small details to do. Since there is very little experience for most surgeons in face transplants this operation isn't very safe.
2. Rejection. The body usually tends to know isn't yours, even if the blood type is exactly the same. If your body rejects the new skin, it will literally just die off and become infected. Strong cases of rejection will pretty much screw you over. Minor cases can usually be kept under check with medication, which you have to literally take every day. Downside to this medication is that it weakens your immune system greatly.
So yeah, we're long ways off from doing it to anyone who doesn't desperately need a face.

What do you mean by removing what's left? Like removing the eyes, nose, mouth off? Can't imagine living for a few hours without them...

I'd hope patients would be totally out.
