Consider when you AREN'T WMing or facing mobs with high Protection. Gladii are easier to critical Smash with, and 11 damage is really not that big of a difference.
Gladius at level 40 strength: 72-125
Gladius at level 40 strength and level 30 all other stats: 87-145
Crit: 30 at level 1 Luck, 44 at level 40 luck.
Bastard Sword at level 40 Strength: 44-136
Bastard Sword at level 40 strength and level 30 all other stats: 54-156
Crit: 10 at level 1 Luck, 17 at level 40 Luck.
PERSONALLY, I would sacrifice 11 Max damage for 33 more Min damage and 27 more Crit. Sure, you won't crit Smash very often on high Prot mobs, but it'll happen FAR more often with a Gladius ego.
Repair swords are also a lot easier to find for Gladii.

I am currently sporting a lvl 40 ego gladius and I crit on hm mobs in provocation alot with smash. Either provocation has mobs that don't have 50% prot or most hm mobs actually don't have 50% crit. I run around with ~75% crit rate. My ego is no where near lvl 40 luck, only at 33% crit (lvl 20 luck)

Well, shadow mission Hardmode doesn't really have much 50% protection monsters compared to regular dungeon Hardmode.
If I remember correctly, SM Hardmode monsters have around 30%~ protection on "average".
While Bastard Sword do have higher max damage, I would probably choose Gladius as well if the choice is between Gladius and Bastard Sword. However, there is also the Muaramasa with 149 max, 43% critical rate as well, but it is very expensive and rare. Gladius on the other hand, have all sorts of color as well.

People most often Windmill though. If you crit WM with a max bastard ego, you can get around 3k dmg nontrans.
If you can land a 3k dmg wm crit on a hm mob with bastard sword, I'm sure u can land a 2.9k wm crit on a hm mob with glad. And perhaps land 4k crit smash with said ego glad. Even tho, I find it hard to believe that you are landing 3k crit wms with just an ego bastard (max or not).
Even assuming that hm mobs only have 30% protection, with 0 def (which is a horrible assumption). Your dmg with crit wm is effectively 3k/0.7 = 4285. Which means your fully equipped dmg needs to be [1143 <- wrong number from stupidity earlier] 685 max dmg >.> so. how the hell did you get that max dmg w/o trans?

Muramasa attacking animation makes the user look like an idiot for not knowing how to use a katana </3 lol

how are you getting 1143 max base? the formula for max critmill, assuming the user is human with r1 mill/r1 crit is max base damage x 2.5(mill) x 2.5(crit), or, dmg(6.25). so if he's doing 3k, if my math is right, his max damage should be around 480, not 1143 o AO
eta: ohwait, prot. still, 4285/6.25 is still nowhere near 1143. it's around 681.

sorry dont know why i used 1.5 for crit, i appologize. but even so not so easy to achieve 685 max dmg non-trans.
calculations: 3k on 30% prot mobs -> 4285 dmg with crit wm
so max dmg needs to be 4285/6.25 = 685 max

not necessarily saying that they're right, mostly i just wanted to point out that your math looked off to me. :P having 685 max out of trans does seem pretty hard to accomplish either way.

It seems I'm the only person who'd ego something for looks rather than Stats/Damage :what:
Sadly I want the Male Blunt Ego but there's no decent looking human blunt weapon..
How I envy those Giants with their Giants Hammers :l, not to mention 2H swords are too skinny for a good ego look and the only huge weapon, Zan Gaiden won't be egoable (but yum at it's base stats)
If you're speaking of pure Ego Spirits, I'd say.. Ego Sword (M)/ Ego Bow (M/F)?
