This is something I think about from time to time...of course, you all each have your own spending habits and money-making methods. What I ponder though is, is (rare) item farming really worth it anymore? Here's what I'm thinking:
As you get stronger, it becomes easier to hunt for items. However, you're also able to hunt enemies that drop large amounts of gold, or even more common desirable items (leather, certain types of equipment). In the best case scenario, you can attempt to combine the two (for example, farming Rundal Advance for decent gold, and a shot at Admiral Coats/Hats) but this usually isn't the case - you're either in an area where you get one or the other. Rare/valuable items tend to be tucked away in annoying places...notably skill pages.
Another thought I have is just the overall low chance of getting any rare item. The typical player will probably have to hunt a particular item for a long time to finally see their efforts pay off. With gold being a much more common drop, would it be a better idea to just go grind out the gold and wait to buy that item from somebody? I think that in only the most extreme cases, a high-powered player should be able to fairly easily grind out enough gold to buy most items they might want.
Really, what it boils down to is: At high levels, you can rack up gold fairly quickly just by fighting stuff and picking up your gold. Does that make it more worthwhile to just be "lazy" and amass gold through normal levelling/selling what you find along the way, rather than gamble on hunting valuable items and possibly lose? What're your opinions? Obviously, I'm leaning towards the "just farm gold to buy stuff" camp. x_x

I really wonder how people can afford to buy stuff from the auction house every week. Seriously, some people pay over 10m for a single item, how do they manage? Please somebody tell me one single activity that can produce that much gold other than buying it with real money.
As for the actual question, during Rainbow Event I ran Shadow Wizard Hard a few times and every time I got well over 120k+ just from picking up drops+the final reward. Made little over 1.5m in a single weekend considering wand repairs and pots. Farming in the other hand takes a lot of dedication and I would say it's not really worth it unless you're a newb.
I remember back in the day when I would run Fiodh or Alby Int with my guild mates just to sell the "rare" pages. Now they have lost their original value and it's not really worth it to bother hunting them anymore. The real money is in Shock pages 8D and now I like to solo (more moneyz++++) lolol.
So yeah as your lvl grows gold just flows in and you get that occasional rare loot/page that helps you buy a nice thing.

Well...when I say farm gold, I guess that could have two meanings here. I don't mean actual crop farming, but rather...just yeah, grinding out levels and taking whatever gold comes in that way.

Sell every little thing you get. Penny pinch as much as you can. Loot every drop of gold (even the ones under 100)
House + Service is a big help.
And for those that say that doesn't do anything for your gold.
Just ask me how much gold i have. I dare you.

He has well over 40-50 Mil im sure, maybe 80+who knows. He is one of the best grinders I've met. I probrably make more money(and spend more) but people who can penny pinch tend to be wealthy. My guild officer never has under 20 mil no matter what he seems to buy.
Now to answer your question if you can be frugal then Augbog007 method is great. Just grind levels in a mission of your choice and rake in the cash. You don't really need much to do that. Just a decent set of equips and the ability to do a somewhat mind numbng thing for a couple hours each day.
The other type of rich person is someone who merchs. To expand on this: basically when they are not leveling they are in the main shop area and looking for deals. Channel surfing over and over again and snagging that rare find. then trading that for something more valuable. After about 20-30 trades (if your smart enough to gauge the local supply and demand) I have seen someone trade 100k in items and end up with 10 mil.
The last type of rich person is a mix of both. They don't merch a ton but they get a feel for what rare items are selling or they take requests (or become well knwn enough to get them). Then they just grind thier levels getting that rare.
Exception to these is the r1 blacksmith: Once he's been r1 for about 6 months he can produce more money than anyone. But since the current gold estmate to r1 is around 180-200 million. They tend to be poor for a long time first.

You can make 1mil off of soloing "Shadow Cast City" on Hard in about a normal, casual-playing day. This is not including selling the Fine/st Leathers and end chest stuff. More work, but less gamble and frustration, in my opinion, than player economy.
I never item farm for gold. I only item/page farm for friends and guildies for free. Good loot that drops randomly when I'm not looking for them usually gets sold though.

This is pretty much what I do. Though I do pick up random leathers and sell those for an easy profit since they drop fairly abundantly in a lot of sm's. And if I find that I have too many mp pots in my inventory, then I also sell those for extra cash. Making a mil per day though is pretty insane, unless your playing for like half the day or something.

I think I'm this type of person. Relying on picking up gold drops to make money is horrible for me because my repairs are extremely costly. Plus it doesn't make money fast enough. I'd prefer to hunt for deals or hunt for items which aren't too rare but still sell for 1-2 mil while gaining levels at the same time.

Also, I completely and totally disagree with this. 1 mil? Either you're insanely lucky or you're exaggerating a lot. I don't even get like 20k worth of gold drops in one SCC and the leathers don't drop that often either (plus they're going down in price now). Most, if not all, of end chest items are things like life drain crystals or something which are maybe 3k each...barely enough to even count. Unless your casual-playing day is grinding this SM like 50 times straight...yeah, I don't think so. =/

Farm for gold. The item farming takes to long and takes longer to sell.

Well, there are some ppl who are good enough to complete SCC HM in about 5 minutes, so it's not all that impractical. Though that means you're spending around 5 hours just doing that. That seems pretty hardcore to consider it casual.

Haha. I can only grind 5 hours in one day if it's 2x exp or the Rainbow event. XD

SCC HM is only ~25k per run, without taking into account the semi-common huge lucky finish from the doppel. It's certainly enough to repair equipment + accessories, but it won't make you rich unless you're spamming it during double rainbow (100k per run and a half and stacks upon stacks of finest leathers).
Some of the very rare items at the endchest such as Glorious bows, Crocodile swords and Stiff shields can be sold for profit, as well as leathers... but you certainly won't be making over one or two millions a week just by spamming it. I actually made
far more money by selling tail caps and enchants/rares from Rundal Normal HM and Rundal Basic HM when I used those places for leveling.
