the sound is played when you are hit though. you have half a second once you hear that sound before the death activates.
Also I just changed the sound for when you die so it's louder than all the other sounds, thus there is no way you can miss the sound of you dying, especially if you've played Touhou cause I'm using ZUN's death sound now.
I also just tested it and 80% of the time I was able to bomb before the death activated. However, the game has to fetch the sound due to how I coded it in flash so if you have slow internet or the rest of the sounds lags then the death sound will lag for you too.
