Defense vs. Protection

  It's speculated that defense is ignored on Critical Hits. If it's true, then the critical portion (150%) would ignore defense, but still get reduced by protection.
  
  Mimics not only have very low damage, but we also don't know the rank of their Critical Hit skill. At Rank F, they would only gain 50% bonus damage. Given that mimics only do about 8 damage, a crit would only add like 4 more damage.
  Also, I do take 6-12 from Mimic crits, while I usually only take 1-3s from noncrits, with around 4 Defense and 0 Prot.

  I dunno, I'm pretty sure I remember them critting 1s on me when I had a shield on before. If I had 15% protection, that would still only reduce their critical of say, 12 damage, to 10 at best if defense were ignored, which doesn't explain why they would critical only 1s at all.

  IIRC, the hidden defense of shields (15 defense for most) is calculated differently from normal (visible stat) defense. Not sure if that applies here.
  
  If you (or anybody) cares enough to find solid proof, we'd need to see Mimic damage and critical damage on a 0def 0prot player and see how that changes for +defense without a shield, and +defense with a shield. Otherwise we're just guessing about it.

  As far as I know, nothing bypasses the hidden stats for shields. I'm pretty sure they're always applied, regardless of how you're hit or with what.
