Modern Music vs Video game music

  Personally, video game music listener. Closest thing to my favorite artists being Go Shiina and Shoji Meguro. Ignoring the music for P3, for which the most I find okay. The Reach For The Truth tune that's rammed in your head in nearly every single song for P4 can be annoying, but I love it regardless. Also, haven't gotten very far in Eternal Punishment, but I love the music so far.

Also, when this bgm comes up in DDS, I wonder how many people had their stomach cave in if they had played Nocturne before it. When a character's default random battle music is playing when your fighting against him in a boss battle, it's a little nervewrecking.
  
  Pushing away from console music, I enjoy zts and dai. Though some people might not consider the examples I'll be linking to as video game music.

  zts kinda borderlines on rave-like music at times though.
  
  Reasons for not liking bands that get popular? Precisely for that reason. Among other possible things, like degrade of quality or that the artist not get as much freedom and has to appeal to the fans more than themselves now (lolwut?). Though, if you instantly dislike a band once it gets popular, you probably didn't like it that much in the first place, right?
  
  /endyoutubelinkspam. Since it's less likely for you all to actually bother youtubing it if I simply said the name and the artist.
  Also, Brad, Niconicodouga and the otaku community =/= Japan's taste in music. Then again, with otakus obsessively buying anime tracks regardless if they listen to them or not, which in turn makes them at the top of the charts for a few weeks...

  I don't feel it. If by badass, you mean cool, maybe. Badass to me means lots of flats and played in a minor key. I also feel it should convey ass kicking and performance of superhuman feats, which I think is hard to express without harsher toned electrical instruments and fast beats.The closest I can get to my feeling of badass from classical music are these videos. Disregard the quiet parts.

  Russian composers in the Contemporary period were probably the forerunners to today's video game music composers, since they experimented a lot more and didn't follow a specific style.

  I listen to VGM but not very often, mostly only the Touhou series has good VGM. There is some really genius composers for anime OST's though, like Mitsumune Shinkichi.
  
  Modern being flooded with overly repetitive and stupid vocals (or just bad singers overall) is a great reason to shun reality. somewhat.

  I'm not into lyrics because when I listen to a song, I pay too much attention to the music and I get into it. Lyrics are alright if there's a good singer, but most of the time I won't know what a song is about because I only recognize the music.

  This is the reason why I love my MSPA music. It's great rythym, melody, and beat. I really don't like vocals that much.
  
  Therefore, I vote for VGMs. The best one of them all is the music that plays during Space Invaders.
