It's a 2 1/2 hour download left, I'm curious.
Let's say there's a newbie that comes to the nation, and this is their introduction.
Hi, I'm PalmTree, and I am in the process of downloading Mabinogi. I know nothing about it, and since there seems to be a variety of good players here, what do you suggest I do? I hear there are three races and four different forms of combat, which all seems to be really complex. And I heard about life skills (That's really cool!), and just got extremely confused.
What do you suggest a total beginner starts with? I heard that endgame is everything, but what do you suggest to start, and then later branching off into everything? Because common logic says that starting off with everything makes you an utter failure.
That was a nice introduction, I wish I did that.
Anyway, what would you say in response to the newbie?
Don't know this is Raj, pretend this is the introduction thread. What do you say?
PERSONAL RESPONSE:
Welcome to Mabinogi PalmTree! Starting out in Mabinogi can be very discouraging, and if you're just starting out, the easiest thing to do would be either Giant Melee or Human Melee. (Pretty much anything melee; note Elf Melee is impossible due to the fact that elves suck, basically, at melee). The choice is yours, but Giants have a lot more power and if you like Melee, you can go into it totally.
What I would do, if I restarted, is make a little "sample" human, where you try out all three types of gameplay. Magic may be expensive but, someone from the nation may be able to help you. Then, discover what two or one you want to concentrate on at first, and remake your character wisely. But if you don't have the patience for that and just want to play for playing and power and such, be a human or a giant melee. (There's no difference except giants have more melee power, but humans have a huge amount of flexibility and choices).
The end. What do you think?

I usually tell new players about the most common combat styles and why specialization is better than ranking everything as a new player, how human/giant melee have the most efficient initial growth as long as they can survive the windmill grind... or how elf range is an endless competition with yourself until you r1 every single life skill, but generally I just end up recommend golems + alchemy mastery and to use all that power to more easily rank other skill sets they might be interested in later on.

I think I would tell them just a few things. Make a human with your free card and offer to take them to get their free giant and elf cards(if they're in my server). I think that's all you need. When I started it was actually in the Japanese server and I knew nothing and could understand less since I don't speak or read Japanese. My brother and I just started playing and having fun. I think for the most part they need to be amongst other newbies.
I'd explain cp. I think that's one thing people should know that they really don't explain well in the game. I'd say to focus on windmill, but seriously, it's a lot easier now then it was in the early days even without -cp gear. I think people can afford to live a little here even. I've seen a couple people just starting out that give up on the game because people kept telling them they couldn't rank skills before wm. You really don't have to rank it on foxes or raccoons; skeletons are good too people.
Oh! One more thing. I would teach them icebolt-counter. We were taught that when we first started. It opened the whole battle system to us. I think the battle system can be a little confusing for people who have played other mmo games.
If you go into too much I think it can get very overwhelming. They need to have fun and experience mabinogi not have a bunch of people telling them how to make an endgame character, etc, etc.

I would say to rank refine and windmill first and then to just do whatever you want after.

this every time.
Then I tell them to watch this vid.

It captures the essence of Mabi.

Elf melee doesn't suck, for one, and it's far from impossible. It just takes more effort and it's not newbie-friendly.
Whatever you do, the first thing that you have to have done is to make a human card and screw around a bit. Follow the instructions, get the hang of the controls, and then have someone take you to Filia/Vales to try out elf/giant.
You also failed to mention the giant's shortcomings in magic and range while talking about their easy melee.

I would tell them to get out while they still can.

I tell them that refining and WM are the key "first" get skills. I would recommend starting a human for elf/giant, and that humans are good at doing everything.
I will also tell them that if they want to develop fast, they will need to put money on it. If they don't want slow development, and can't pay, they should either find NX or just move to another game entirely.
Usually, I don't have to tell them that. 23849023849023840932 other people on the forum will tell them the various variations of it, and then cold reality slaps the newbie across the face when they start playing, which results in them quitting shortly after.

That was epic, but I'm not giving you rep for it.
Why weren't you there when I started?

I would tell them to definitely start as a human first. Even though they might want to play as a Giant or an Elf, i'd mention that eventually you can get free cards for each race later on.
Then yeah, i'd say, first you want to rank Windmill and Critical Hit, and nothing else. Then, you'll want to save your money and rank Refine. And finally, i'd mention that Shadow Missions are good experience and good for introducing you to real combat [at least, it helped me], and that you should focus on one type of character [melee/mage/ranged] first, then move on to another playing style if you want.

Tell them to enjoy the game as they see fit. They will discover what they want to do as they explore the world.
The first being of course, learning how to survive.

I'd tell them to disable Nagle.
Then to call me later when they've done that.
