So i'm making a temporary character in Ruairi due to Alagxina just frustrating me.
I can't really stomach combat at the moment and really want to work on Life Skills, like Tailoring and Weaving [two of my all-time favorites].
I once had a character on Mari that I neglected, found again with over 150AP from leaving her, rebirthing, repeating, and got to like, r9 Tailoring/rB Weaving/r5 Prod. Mastery, rapidfire.
The problem is, playing actively, i'll have to actually level [THE HORROR I KNOW!], to get my AP.
So my plan is to leave combat skills at rF. Maybe combat mastery can go to rE. Then the rest is devoted to life skills. Screw Refine for now.
Feasible? Yay or nay.
Beginner quests can get me to ~level 20, anyways.
And my character'll be age 12-13, to reap the benefits of being a crafting-based character.

Your AP use usually will be really low since the majority of those skills go slow and use low AP (Except for a few.) I would reccomend you at least rank up some minor things for gatherings sake, like leathers, so combat mastery and critical would be ADVISABLE, my friend always said "Even if you were a pure life skiller, you NEED to rank critical."
That's just what I have to say, since you WILL need leathers for weaving and tailoring, and blacksmithing if you worked on that.

putting the AP prob aside. It works as long as you get slaves to get you the stuff or buy the mats since rafting is out of question, farming leather is another thing you wont be able to.
weaving, metalurgy, refining and carpentry are possible to r1 without fighting
tailoring/smithing is impossible unless you have tons of money available to buy your materials (leathers mostly)
herbalism will be hard to since most herbs are in dungeons

Indeed.
I thought about it myself, and after finding a cache'd page on Guru talking about the ridiculousness of having one character for combat and one for life skills...I actually think it makes sense.
I love Giant's raw combat power, so I can get an assistant card and use her for smashing things. And save my human for life skills.
It seems silly to a lot of people, i'm sure, but it's something I really enjoyed and got me into the game.

If I were in your position, I would get Thunder to a high rank (Magic Mastery too). Thunder lets you raft, which will provide a lot of materials you will need for life-skills and give you all the AP such a character would ever need... The only problem being actually hunting for Thunder pages and the AP required for the skill to be efficient (r6+).
Rafting, however, may become somewhat less efficient in G13 should the ego glitch be fixed... in such a case, Golems + AM is always a good option if you want to have incredibly high combat capabilities at a very low total level, without spending much AP in combat branches.

I guess I could do that on another character, right? Hunting for pages and whatnot.
Although, i've never done rafting nor really dabbled in Magic...just a little on another character, but all I had was the basic bolts to rD. And I sucked hardcore at Magic.
Brilliant idea that popped into my head: Alchemy.
I've been dying to try it out, and Alchemy isn't based off of stats.
Getting some of the skills would be a pain in the arse, but I could try it out.

Word of advice: Metallurgy/Refining/Metal Conversion can be your early source of income.
[Rank 1] Carpentry bows can also be a quick way to make money (if the demand is there). You don't need to touch combat to make money or gather materials, as long as you can play the market effectively. You also don't need to spend NX (though you can probably buy it with your own gold) to make a lot of gold.
Do you need combat to get materials in a practical manner? The answer is actually no. Does combat raise efficiency to get the materials? Yes.
The fundamentals you need to adapt to at all times are time and patience.

Well said.
I think, for now, i'm going to be a pure Alchemist. The skills look beast and it'll be something to dabble in.
Once i've got the funds, life skills it is.

In My opinion AND experience... DONT do it.. why bother? what are you gonna do... ok make a pure life skiller but... you def wont make enough to be able to buy or ~cough~ kill for your leathers for weave/blacksmithing and dont even think about doing it all by yourself... cause then you'll be doing it for 2 years straight.. (IM NOT KIDDING) anyways... its stupid... why? because you'll eventually rank everything... even for giant the amt of dex you get from these skills... if you have a char using dex.. you'll just have to do these life skills over again.... yeah... and the first time your not gonna be able to do anyways..and the ap required for these life skills is so low... why would you even bother...and dont say giant cause im sure farther down the line giants will use dex in someway for a skill or something
EDIT: and heres me reading it over and seeing myself RANT RANT RANT RANT >.> lol o well

Reasons why it's better to do life skills on your main character and not a secondary character :
1) Stats gained from Life Skills promote your important stats such as Dex and Str.
2) No hassle in switching between characters to do a specific life skill.
3) You're definitely going to level up more often and gather more AP on your main than on a mule/secondary character.

You will need r1 Production Mastery. For many "basic" lifeskills, having tons of dex would increase the success rate.
Not to mention, even if you get to top ranks to make your stuff, you still need to compete with the market.

Yeah, I changed my stance and i'm making a pure Magic/Alchemy character and i'll work on Life Skills.
Yes, ik, THEREISNOSUCHTHINGASCLASSESINMABI, but I really want to focus on just those two. I'm ranking Windmill to either 5 or 1, of course.

I wouldn't do it.
I started a Potion Making character and just quit. Then I started doing Potion Making on my main.
It's not worth it, IMO. It gets really boring to do one thing over and over again. We all need variety.
Edit: You changed your mind before my post. haha
