Try to buy one in person since barely any sites are legit.
Just go to a flea market or something. I got mine from a street vendor in Japan tbh.

R4 partially sucks. If that's the only flashcart available, then buy it. Amazon is semi-legit, so I've heard. The best flashcart would be an Acekard. If not, then stick with an R4. I got mine from those little shops in a Chinese Supermarket(very rare, I don't think they sell it anymore). Since there's now something called Wood R4 that basically turns the firmware of your R4 to an Acekard, it's okay.
On how they work, they're basically DS cards with insertable Micro SD card slots into them. The firmware is stored there, as well as most of your ROMs and such.

I would buy them in person and test them out. Whack the back of the DS where the cartridge is a few times and make sure it doesn't freeze.
Mine likes to freeze to every tiny bump.

What's wrong with the R4? I've been using mine for years now and it still works fine so I don't know what you are talking about.
Judging by the topic you made you have an R4i which is a clone flashcart of the original R4 which means it wasn't made the by original R4 company. The only real R4 they made were the originals and the company shortly broke up after they made the original. Other companies made clone flashcarts claiming that they were the original R4 and that's why there's a bunch of R4's called R4i Ultra, R4 SDHC, R4 Gold which as I said are nothing more than cheap knock--offs than the original.
So a flash cart is an adapter that let's the DS read what's on the SD Card and that's basically it. The SD cart is where all the data is help like Firmware and games while the flashcart itself is supposed make the DS read it . Nothing too complicated.
Also I suggest getting the Acekard 2i since it gets recent firmware updates so it can run games with Anti-Piracy (Lots of DS games are getting these now) they're the only flashcart that actually care about it's customers and not money.

Trust me the R4 clones are the horrible flashcarts you can ever try.
What's so "Screwy" with the Acekard 2i?

I put it down on the table and it freezes.
I think it's just mine though. Doesn't change the fact that I have a distaste for flashcarts now.

Where did you get it?
Oh also I forgot to post the link
So just ignore the R4 clones since the real ones aren't being made anymore.
I guess if it comes down to it make it an AceKard2 or an M3.

You can do more research here and they also have a Wiki.

Edit: Don't use Gbatemp's partner shop Shoptemp since it just got closed down.

I bought a M3DS way back, I just randomly googled where I should buy and tried one site and got it in a few days. Sadly, it didn't come with the Micro SD card so I had to buy that separately. I still have it today but all I do is use it as a MP3 player since there aren't any worth while DS games these days.
/waiting for NA Pokemon B/W (Which I'll buy the game since Pokemon games are real buggy if ROM downloaded.)

Sigh...
If flash carts are rare/unreliable, am I better off buying the actually rune factory game?
...
Why aren't DS games as easy to pirate as PSP games. >_>

They are reliable o_o.
If you have suspicion just do research on the link I gave you.
Just beware of clones they won't work.
Also pirating a DS game is easy. :P
Download and Extract to SD card.

Yea, it's reliable and easy. Just some games don't work perfectly for some, such as a few of the Castlevania games (PoR) and I'm sure Pokemon Plat (NA) or will constantly freeze every now and then. But most games I've played work fine.
Just be happy it isn't as complex as modding a PSP.
