My question is were you taught long division as a part of your schooling and do you remember how to do it?
Being a highschooler i never was taught this age old method behind dividing
So I decided to look up how its done and well didn't expect it to be so forward as long as you remember your good old multiplication tables and how to subtract you can do long division

I still remember
I learned it in grade 5 or 6 perhaps, which would be.. about 8 yrs ago.
it's pretty basic but it's inefficient nowadays

Alot of people were raised with calculators and dont even know or were taught this method
If it wasnt for the fact my mother taught me this I wouldn't even know about long division
I wonder if anyone was taught the lattice method of multiplication

Oh. Well dang. I still use long division, but really only when I don't feel like digging through my purse to find my calculator.
It isn't very difficult. So is it just not taught anymore?

i think it's for the same reason why they aren't teaching cursive that much anymore

I learned long division in elementary school ._.
My school doesn't allow calculators during exams, so no calculators during class, either.

They don't teach cursive, either???? That's all I was allowed to write in in 4th grade!!!! D:
Made me hate it though.
Actually, now that I think about it, that doesn't make sense. People have to learn how to sign their names, so why wouldn't they teach cursive?

I think their logic is that the most people will use cursive for is to sign their names.
Although the long division thing is idiotic. Why would they stop that?

I only find cursive useful for one single important use
Signatures
Outside of that unless you want to look good I say go with standard print
-
Skye wrote on 2011-02-09 23:13
But you have to learn cursive before you can use it in signatures, don't you?
