School has only been mainstream for the past few years.
You can find hundreds of good animes that aren't all action or about schools. I won't even list any, everyone else is doing a half decent job of listing them (though many of you make me sigh and shake my head)
Edit: DBZ has an incredibly awesome plot and I'm disappointed to think that you don't think so. Its probably one of the more plot driven series compared to other action series nowadays.
Edit Edit: School Life almost always follows the build of "male protagonist is worthless, meets an amazing girl who does everything, male protagonist watches and pretends to help, they end up getting together in the end". Its pretty boring. Only one I really enjoyed was Seto No Hanayome, mostly because its hilarious as hell, and Haruhi but only because it was one of the first of its kind.
Edit edit edit: I really enjoyed Ranma too, but I dunno if that counts as a school comedy. Certainly doesn't count as one of the ones coming out now since it was made before manga had such bland builds and standards.

Your probably just nostalgia-ing.
Seriously, there isn't much of a plot in it, they stare at each other while screaming and occasionally pelvic thrust.
Plot is simplistic, and I don't find it very engaging.

This.
and Haruhi pisses me off,I cant bring myself to like it after they did that 7 episodes of the exact same thing.

DBZ did have a good plot. You just have to keep in mind it's mainstream shÅnen, so everything is going to take like 8-12x longer than a normal series.
DBZ: Kai might be more to your taste. I haven't watched it. But I hear that it's DBZ but without all the fillers and pretty much just the main events and sticks to the manga. It's 98 or 99 episodes compared to the original 253. So, it's considerably shorter. Hmm... I just watched a YouTube video. Looks like they did a crappy job changing Frieza's voice actor. I just loved Linda Young as Frieza. Gohan's voice makes me want to kick baby seals or something, it's so horrible. Actually, most the voices seem to suck in general, wth. But yeah, it should be faster action and no filler.

Too bad Kai pretty much trolls you with the quality of the Opening to the quality of the actual series.

I'm not nostalging.
I go through the entire DBZ series like once every other year. And I'm always impressed by the plot each time.
For a faster route you can read the manga. Because manga back then were much more simple, you can read through it much faster than most other manga nowadays. Its 42 volumes between DB and DBZ, but each volume can be read in a good 15 minute sitting.
The last arc (after Cell, the Buu saga) was forced by shonen jump. He never intended to make it. The quality does reflect that, with major power jumps and fusions, but up until the end of Cell saga, I always enjoyed the plot.

I mean it really feels like your just watching the same thing, zoomed in.

GT sucked.
Dragon Ball always felt very light and plot-less to me, DBZ was a little more involved but not too big of a plot. It just got boring because DBZ fell into a basic rut of "New badguy, he does evil stuff, goku beats him up"
Maybe its just because it was so damn long, and the arcs didn't relate to each other at all.

If we're talking DBZ then I think the Abridged series on youtube is doing a better job of portraying it's characters and plot than the actual show did.
Beyond that, what IS the plot of DBZ beyond "Oh yeah and Goku is even godlier now because X"?

A lot of slice of life anime aren't school based are by nature non action as well.
Aria
Chi's Sweet Home and Atarashi Ouchi
Haibane Renmei
Kappa no Kaikata
Skip Beat!
Are some of my favorites. Slice of Life are usually boring for most people so just be aware.
I was going to mention that one. It was quite different from everything I'd seen at the time. It's soundtrack is quite nice too. I have the OST in my car's CD player right now; the music is especially good at keeping me calm when the road is full of idiots.

Zoomed in what?
Its the same thing but like 80% faster.
And the whole "new bad guy, does evil stuff, goku beats up" is more or less the plot behind EVERY battle series. The path taken is what sets them apart.

Man, I hate how people jump on the DBZ-bashing-bandwagon. It was a great show compared to all of the crappy moeblob anime that's out these days. I mean, I can't even sit through most anime that are "popular" right now.
I have been able to watch things like Armored Trooper Votoms, Aura Battler Dunbine, and older things though. If you want diversity. I suggest you watch those obscure, maybe older anime that nobody even talks about.
Votoms is a pretty good show that's kinda like a war drama, but with robots. Not even SUPERHAXBEAMSPAMMINGINVINCIBLE-robots like Gundam Seed/Destiny or things like that either. Though if you don't like mecha too much, I can't see you getting into it.
Dunbine is kinda like mecha in a fantasy setting. I really enjoyed it. Except for some derp-moments (Yoshiyuki Tomino directed it after all, and he comes up with the strangest names/settings. like a character named "Shot Weapon")
I also suggest Victory Gundam, if you want another gritty war drama. (Directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino when he was depressed.) Though, it doesn't seem like it at first, but **** GETS REAL as you go into the story

Really? I didnt know it was a bandwagon.
Its not impossible that there are people that just genuinely dont like the show.
Saying that just makes you sound like you've jumped on the "all mainstream things are crap" bandwagon, yourself.

Not really, every single arc anime is pretty much safe from that. Basically I'm saying long shonen anime annoy me (bleach, one piece, naruto ect.)
I'm not bashing the show, I actually like it, but I could go without the filler/annoyingly long speeches or fights
also Kai has a different screen ratio then the regular series thats what I mean by zoomed in. I haven't watched it since I finished the series, excluding GT.

Where did I say that "all mainstream things are crap"? I just don't enjoy this season's anime, I never said I hated everything that's mainstream in general. I actually enjoy Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Code Geass, etc. It seems like everything is just catering to fanservice these days. I mean, look at High School of the Dead's anime. The manga was awesome. But the anime turned out to just be fanservice leaving out key events in the manga for boobs.
And I understand that there are people who don't like DBZ. But, they don't have to say that we're just "Nostagia-ing" to like it.

Im not puting words in your mouth, i was just pointing out that when you said

it sounded like the beginning of most "mainstream/popular shows are crap" rants that i see all the time.
Im sure DBZ is a great show, i just never got interested in it long enough to keep watching.
