You need too many resources to protect the life of one bear.

I am sad of them killing the poor cub, but I can see their intentions :gloom2:
To those in favor of a zoo - their conditions are not as good as it sounds; the room they are given is nothing compared to what they are happy with.
Just lazing around, doing nothing every day; that sounds horrible in itself.

Wonder how many people feel this way because the cub was cute?

me!
Although, I'm pretty sure bears are the raccoons of Canada (even though both are common in Canada depending on the location..)
EVEN THOUGH RACCOONS HAVE RIGHTS TO LIVE. Foreal.

Raccoon's that deny other animals the right to live? Ever wondered what happened to the duck's nest in my garden? Raided by pirate raccoon's. Bears are worse, much worse. They will go into your house and raid your fridge if they are hungry enough.

Yeah, and mama bears get pissed when their cubs are near humans. It's a threat to human life to let the bear cub roam around.
It takes too many resources to preserve that one bear's life (and yeah, it probably won't be happy in a zoo), and that money could be put to better uses, like say, benefiting human life, perhaps.

Did you know that Raccoons ALWAYS wash their food in water before eating it?
The zoo keepers gave cotton candy to them, and they kept "washing" it, and it would all melt out of their hands. It took them a good 10 tries before they finally just ate it.

Raccoons are evil geniuses, they use their minds unlike bears who use brute force ~_~

Bears may be cute, but you have to remember that they are dangerous wild animals.
A bear not being afraid of humans is a very bad thing. When that cub grew up, having associated humans with food, when it gets hungry... where do you think it's going to go?
That's right, to humans. And what happens when it's big enough and a human looks like a meal ticket? That's right. It's a horrible accident just waiting to happen. Someone would either be eaten or mauled very badly by a bear like that.
It was a wild animal, not a tame pet.
Though, I do think relocating it to an area much further away from humans where it would have been unrealistic for the bear to come in contact with them would have been less cruel to the animal, I don't think it was a bad move.
While the bear itself when grown could be a potential threat, an angry extremely protective mother bear could be a much bigger threat. Someone would almost certainly die, as curious and unafraid of humans as that little thing was. The mother would see the humans the cub was playing with as a threat and they'd get mauled or eaten. It could be a very tragic day for humans.
Best we think about the safety of our own species first.

Yeah, people are stupid. Not long ago, I've overheard some lady at work talk about her camping trip. She was saying how "it was so friendlyyyyyyyyy ^____^" and how she fed it stuff. I wanted to get up, walk over and punch her in the face. (ok, not really.. but it was an orz moment of epic proportions).
As TA said, when bears don't fear humans, it's a bad thing. Camping/hiking trips become much more dangerous as bears will look for humans, rather than look to avoid them. Hell, bears even wander into neighbourhoods because of this.
