Yeah, people are stupid. Not long ago, I've overheard some lady at work talk about her camping trip. She was saying how "it was so friendlyyyyyyyyy ^____^" and how she fed it stuff. I wanted to get up, walk over and punch her in the face. (ok, not really.. but it was an orz moment of epic proportions).
As TA said, when bears don't fear humans, it's a bad thing. Camping/hiking trips become much more dangerous as bears will look for humans, rather than look to avoid them. Hell, bears even wander into neighbourhoods because of this.
They will break into your house, eat you, raid your fridge then leave.
Oh and this

I know what you mean. I was whitewater rafting in West Virginia, and where we stopped to eat (where many others do the same), there were a lot of squirrels who would come right up to you. Basically, they'd become accustomed to people feeding them, providing their food supply. But, the sad part is when the rafting season is over and months go by without anyone coming down the river, many of these squirrels will likely starve to death without the people they become dependent on.

Those are just 3 that come up when googling "eaten by bear." There are 23
million other hits.
Just look on youtube, there's thousands of bear attack videos.
Why do you think they teach campers what to do if attacked by a bear?

The night before her death, Munson planned to feed an injured baby bear hard-boiled eggs and yogurt, another former tenant said. And she had planned to swat a large bear that was bothering the baby bear with a broom.
.......
(top two links are the same story btw, third link is just some life story.)

What, don't tell me you honestly don't think bears wouldn't eat humans given the opportunity? I'm sure you can find some other links on google.
We don't have teeth or claws and we aren't very fast or strong, we're a very easy meal for predators. They don't care about how intelligent you are. It's instinct, and you're food.
The only reason they don't seemingly actively hunt and eat humans is because we're advanced to the level that we're no longer naturally a part of their habitat. If we lived in the forests like some less advanced cultures, we most certainly would be part of their menu.
But, you go into their habitat and don't seem threatening enough or have a weapon to scare it off or kill it... If it's hungry, you're a meal. Just like lions and tigers. It's a wild animal and it's a predator.
I mean, heck... there's a video of a lion eating someone on youtube:

Wild animals... predators... it's not much different with bears.

A lot of attacks seem really serene and calm like that. Chances are though, that the very first thing the lioness did was sever his spinal cord.

Bears eat other bears. At least, male bears will eat any cubs they find.
So if there was a juicy looking bear steak... They'd probably eat it, lol.

Contrary to what you might think, humans aren't that tasty to animals >__>
The large majority of bear/animal attacks happen because the human provoked the animal in some way, either by being in their territory, or being close to their cubs, etc. Bears don't hunt down humans to eat.
Another example of "man-eating" animals that don't actually really eat humans is sharks.

While we are not in fact the preferred meal to most animals that doesn't mean that if they are hungry enough they would pass us up. A hungry bear will not distinguish between a deer or a human, if it is hungry it will eat humans.
Oh and a few wild cats such as cougars and lions ~_~ *Points to Tsavo lions*
