Well, it has a haori-like piece(the red part in my picture), an obi sash, and the "dress" part looks like a hakama. Regardless, kimono or not it looks great IMO. No one dresses like that anymore, so it's exotic and unique. I like ancient/cultural attire because you don't see them everyday and it shows the unique designs and history in the clothing of ancient societies, for instance Victorian era clothing.

Nah, the Vanalen is definitely not a kimono, as others have pointed out. It's closer to say, Manchurian clothing or even Mongolian clothing, either way, I also definitely would not say it of any cultural attire really. That's like looking at Alexander McQueen and saying "this is so Victorian era"--it's high fashion, that's all. As long as you like it, that's all that should matter. Case in point, I love the outfit and have one myself.

It's pretty hard to recognise this as a Kimono actually.
I consider it a fancy dress aswell.
I mean when people say Kimono, most people (
me included) think of something like this.

Yours doesn't look very similar.
And certainly not more so than to this, which happens to be a dress.

Yea that's not a Kimono...
If you looked at female version of Vanalen wear, it's not really a Kimono at all.

This... shes right... traditionally male kimonos aren't poofy and are vertical, and slender. In mabinogi even if that's male only .. In mabi.. Im sorry
[SPOILER="Spoiler"]It's a male dress
also male I don't think white and bright blue are common MALE* kimono colours

It's nice to know that I can remember something I read quite some time ago. Haha.
I was really hoping the Vanalen M was some sort of unisex dress-type thing, before I was told what it was. I kind of prefer it to the female. 8D;
EDIT:
Vanalen F can still be considered a "sort of" Kimono. It's more like Wa-Lolita, a Lolita style inspired mainly by kimonos, but with some very blatantly obvious differences, including the length and shape. The fabrics will look similar and the dresses will still have an obi, but there's a lot of non-traditional add-ons...

Make it pink and I'd wear it. :p
This outfit, ignoring the flowers, reminds me a bit of Auron's outfit from Final Fantasy X.
When I think of a male kimono...
I always picture the Yukata (M).
Even though that's a yukata. xD

Reminds me more of a Yukata, actually.
But America is known for being ignorant to everything that isn't actually American.

I don't know how many times that someone came up to me and say "Nice dress!" and get me ticked off over it. After that, I either get complimented, people begging to get my suit, or just insulting me for wearing it. Honestly, I think it's about the time that some people needs to learn a lesson.
This is NOT a Dress:

In the Asian Culture, there was Kimonos and males usually worn them for formal occasions. To be honest, I think Mabinogi North America needs a course into Japanese/Chinese/Korean Culture to understand that these aren't EXACTLY dresses. Yet, the stupidity increases daily in life and cannot get that through people's heads.
Edit: I actually forgot the name of the formal suit in real life; however, it's not a dress.
Funny thing is that, most of those people might have been Asian, regardless, I don't fully blame them. Seeing as how, for a lack of better word, feminine it looks. As mentioned before, the bottom of this kimono looks too puffy, thus the illusion of a dress.

Ask any European what a Yukata is. I will bet my virility that in the most cases you'll just get a blank stare.
You seriously can't expect people to know everything about a foreign culture that could possibly be known about it.
Have you ever heard about
Spitzbetzeltracht?

Yes, but isnt a yukata a light summer kimono made of cotton? So wouldn't it be even less wide and poofy? Plus it looks more like silk to me with that shine
