For someone wanting to start collecting, do you have any recommendations?
Well, if you're into characters, I can recommend Revoltech if you wish for super pose-able figures. I personally don't like them too much on human figures because the joints look obvious, but, they can pull off some really nice poses. (fun fact: Revoltech Vash the Stampede has joints in his coat)

Pre done paint job is okay, and, the price isn't too bad either for what you get. Generally you get a lot in the way of effect parts, alternate heads/hands, and weapons. I like Revoltech Jehuty a lot. Mine looks pretty cool on my shelf.

I haven't bought any Figma yet, but, I always read favorable things about them, and the only reason I haven't bought one is because shipping from foreign shops is murder unless you go for the slow/untrackable shipping. They have a wide variety of character in the line, like Rei Ayanami (Evangelion), Aigis (Persona 3), Kuroneko (oreimo), R Dorothy (Big O), and Miku (Vocaloid). I've actually had my eyes on most of the figures I mentioned... Best part about Figma are the fact that the engineering on the joints makes them look less obvious then most figures. Based on looks, they're the best looking non fixed posed figures out there.

As a modeler, I recommend you stay away figures that need assembly because generally they're made of resin, and that can be hard to work with.
