Emoticons are so pathetic

    Leave people to their own.

We can't all change the way we do things just because you don't like it when we use emotes.

My friends and I will use simple emoticons (:D, :P, 8D) throughout our IM chats. Emoticons used appropriately can actually add a lot to a casual conversation. You can set the mood and completely change the meaning of a sentence just by adding emoticons. If you only generalize emoticon users as idiots and then say "you have to be very eloquent to convey your thoughts properly," you just look like an elitist.

Welcome to the internet. You must be new. There's cake and orange drink on the table over there.

But in all seriousness, you seem to be confusing the overuse of emoticons with the use of emoticons. Let's break the word down a bit.

Emot - derived from emote or emotion. An emotion, as we all know, is a feeling. Some examples are joy, disgust, anger, and nonchalance.
Icon - a sign or representation that stands for its object by virtue of a resemblance or analogy to it.

So let's use those to reconstruct the word. A representation of an emotion. Seems simple enough.

I've come to the conclusion that you are definitely new to the internet, hence your irrational rage towards emoticons, and there's a possibility that you're a female. Don't worry though, hopefully you'll grow out of it. If not, there's always hordes of new users and women on the internet, I'm sure you can find someplace to settle.

For my parting words, I'd just like to say that emoticons are good. Using them doesn't that you don't know how to convey your feelings. On the contrary, you've found a way to convey your feelings. Just like traveling 50 miles, you can walk there any cry about it, use motorized transportation, or just plain cry about it and not get there. It's your choice.

But I can see your frustration with this. Often times I'll see posts or emails flooded with xDs, o3os, and :)s. Who might do this? Well, like you said, young persons and females. Young people are usually new to the internet, and will be hyperemotive about the vastness of the internet. They may be excited a great deal by emoticons, or severely enraged by their peers' overuse of them. On the other end of the spectrum, are women. Since women are still lacking in the evolution department, they may retain some characteristics of a new internet user. Although unlike a new male internet user, a female internet user usually lacks the brain capacity and higher function to grow out of that.

i totally agree with this. in fact my fiance, some close friends and myself use emotes all the time, it's no big deal. when a friend doesn't use them i tend to think something's wrong with them and there usually is ):

There is truth behind most stereotypes, and I wonder why the male stereotype is all brawns and no brains?
