That's why I don't watch ridiculously long animes.
Too many episodes, barely any progress in the story.
Than may I suggest watching the amazing anime Black Cat? It's only 23 or so episodes, (Unfortunately) but I enjoyed every moment of it.

Is it really that big of a surprise? It's not like this doesn't happen frequently.
Have you seen Dragon Ball Z?
Piccolo, Vegeta, and more.
Tons of animes do the same thing, Rosario + Vampire for instance.

Best Wishes is weird to me. It's a migraine if you treat it as a continuation of the earlier string of series (many of which I did not watch, although I did return to catch bits and pieces of Diamond/Pearl). However, if you treat it as a retcon/AU sort of series, while there are still some headaches (If this is basically the series starting over, how does Ash know about Team Rocket? And wtf does Pikachu know Iron Tail/Volt Tackle?), it's so much more enjoyable for its camp factor. Besides in spite of how shoddy its production is, there are quite a few things it did well:
-Iris is awesome. Her Kibago is awesome. Her hair is a gateway into another dimension... of dragons!
-Dragon Sneeze. Screw Dragon Rage; I demand that every dragon type know Dragon Sneeze and use it accordingly.
-Squirrel type Pokemon. Diamond/Pearl tried its damnedest to overthrow Lord Tyrant Pikachu as the reigning electric rodent mascot, and as far as I'm concerned, with Pachirisu it worked. Squirrels are the new world order. Don't believe me? Then explain how a normal type squirrel and an electric type flying squirrel quickly became two of the most epic Pokemon that appeared in the Best Wishes series.
-Mijumaru. Pokemon haven't quite had interesting personalities since the original 150 and maybe the next 100 after that, but never have I seen such a perfect blend of awesome and fail rolled into one Pokemon. From the first time he shows up to kick Pikachu off of Ash's shoulders to fricking cheating (a pure Water type who can deflect electric attacks amongst other things with a mere wave of his shell), this retarded-looking Pokemon has somehow managed to win me over.
-It made me care about a fire pig. It fricking made me care about a fire pig. I love fire types to death, but aside from Cyndaquil, Charmander, and Chimchar, the fire starter pokemon lines seemed to fall apart whenever they looked to old McDonald's farm for inspiration. I don't care much for pigs, and I dislike pork. So why, oh why, did a fire pig win me over?
-It made an episode where everyone almost died. And I don't mean fall off a cliff peril. The Pokemon in this episode were feeding off their life essence the entire time, maliciously no less. I mean, it's obvious they'd have lived (or else the show would end abruptly), but the threat was actually quite present, for once.
-Team Rocket has never been forced to blast off. I've got my reservations about their personality in this series, but they're technically undefeated in the sense Pokemon has associated with them. There are many missions they've abandoned, but when they win, they win big, and they've won a lot since Best Wishes began. Jesse and James are badasses in this, competent (though with terribad camp lines), and they have never been das booted. Every episode they showed up was trolling you, making you wonder when they were gonna spout their familiar line as they were knocked into orbit. In fact, when Kibago's Dragon Rage finally worked, I remember going "Let's see you not blast off again after that." When the smoke cleared, they did indeed blast off. With jet packs. Unharmed. They're more like ninjas/spies than bumbling foils this time. Ironically, in previous installments of Pokemon, it was always alluded to that Jesse, James and Meowth are very talented... so long as they're not doing stuff for Team Rocket.
It's low-budget, shoddy, cheesy, lacking in continuity, riddled with bad and overused CG, and very poorly written. And much like previous installments, quite a few episodes have nothing going for them, not even regarding camp or cheese. But somehow it works. Kinda sorta the same way Adam West made Batman work. Except it has no Adam West in it, making this even more baffling.

This also reminds me of another anime, isn't Case Closed STILL being aired?
