  Yeah, I wish I could go in and get the songs from my iPod without having to go through so many back doors... but that's really the only problem I have with it. Most mp3s have their own plugs anyway, and docks.. well, docks... EH. Are there still standard docks these days? /only sees apple anyway

  Micro USB for phones and newer MP3 players, now. At least they're not pushing some new headphone jack onto people...

  I'm not exactly an Apple-hater, since I think that's silly, but I was seriously considering an Apple MP3 player when I decided it was time to finally replace my ancient Sony MiniDisc. (I bet most people here don't even know what a MiniDisc device is!) At first I thought I'd get an iPod Touch, since 16GB for $300 seemed like a decent deal for all the extra functionality in that device. But then I thought about it some more and realized that it would be a silly purchase because:
  1) I was planning to buy a smartphone anyway, so the functionality would be duplicated and hence useless.
  2) Cellphone-grade sound quality, do not want.
  3) Big size, do not want.
  
  I wanted something high end, so I considered the 16GB Nano for $200... mostly because the Future Shop and BestBuy stores don't carry any other high end MP3 players anymore. Just some cheap stuff + Apple stuff now. =_=;
  
  But then I found out that Sony in Canada has released one of their Asian market high end MP3 players, the NWZ-S745! This thing has sexy looks, metal/glass construction, battery life that far surpasses the Nano, no need for that iTunes junk and most importantly, it has a built-in electronic noise-cancelling system. It's not just noise-blocking, it actually uses mics to detect noises around you and then inserts an opposite sound wave into your music to erase the outside noise. I was surprised at how well it worked. @_@ All of this on top of Sony sound quality already being better than Apple's. So ya, suffice to say.. Apple lost that round and Sony got my money. x)

  Other MP3 players and similar items make me want to rip my hair out. Nothing has a system quite as streamlined and tidy as the ipod. The touch screens are always not as sensitive, or the controls would be awkward.

  
  
  Makes me wonder which ones you've tried. :P I've used iPods and they were okay, but they weren't anything special. Touchscreen music players suck, since you can't control them without taking them out of your pocket, unless you rely on a remote. Due to that, I was never interested in comparing those. I'll admit that Apple's touchscreen implementation in general is excellent, and Sony's previous attempt at it produced a device that was extremely expensive and its quality not matching said price tag. xd
  
  But I'm not gonna say never. Never say never! If they release something good that I need, then I'll consider it.

  I have an I-pod Touch and an old Macintosh with a v.1.4 OSX on it. My family is in love with Apple products. Each member(except for my Grandma because she dosen't know how to use them) of my family owns an I-Phone, and my dad has a Mac. My brother also owns an I-pad, and all the cousins I've visited all own I-phones and I-Pads as well. I'm probably the only one in the family that detests Apple.

  The only Apple product I've ever owned (and still do) is a first generation iPod Touch, given to me as a gift (when it was the only generation). It's the second portable music player I've ever owned; the first one was a Sony Walkman (yes, the kind that played cassette tapes and looked like this).

  The only Sony MiniDisc product I saw was the recorder one that my uncle had in his electronic storage room at his work station.
  
  I thought it was sort of neat, but that was around the time when CD players were getting to be popular with mainstream, and I thought it was the next-gen in CD players.

  From what I understand, it is because they mainly focus on presentation when it isn't much better than other companies.

  I almost considered iphone as my smart phone but too many apple-related things put me off from it.
  It traps you in the world of itunes, for updates and syncing the device with your PC. I never want itunes anywhere near me. Recent apple products pretty much run on itunes for anything related to software updates/management and file transfering. It's horrible.
  Then there's apple's app store and marketing. If I wanted to be legit, I'm a slave to what apple decides I'm allowed to buy in the app store. Too closed up for me, so no thanks. So I want an iphone that isn't made by apple.
  
  Then there's the macbook air, which is an awesome piece of hardware, but it's got the mac operating system while everything else in my life is linux and windows. So I want a macbook air that isn't made by apple.
  
  So for the smartphone I decided to just not get one until mobile services in my area don't suck, which means I probably won't have one anytime soon.
  For the lightweight netbook type of thing, got my hopes up for the ultrabook, will see how that turns out.

  I use Mac products everyday at school.

  I would say, in general, it's the control factor of Apple. As Osayidan noted, to be legit, you can only get new software from the AppStore where Apple decides what is allowed. Apple reviews EVERYTHING that goes on there (every software submission and every update); part of it is for quality control and to ensure a general look and feel is kept between different applications, but there is also anti-competitive behavior and censoring happening there as well.
  
  "Jailbreaking" an iPod/iPhone merely opens up the possibility to install software from other sources than Apple directly, which is how things normally are everywhere else in the world of software. If the AppStore was simply one of many ways to acquire software, like Steam, it would be fine, but since it's the ONLY means of obtaining software that you're allowed to have, I think it's ridiculous.
