  I don't think they meant it in a mean way. I think they just meant that art only takes artistic skill and talent, and you could do that regardless of how smart you are. But being smart, you could also go to be a doctor, lawyer, politician, blah blah blah. They probably just want the best for you... artists don't make a lot of money.

  
  
  Oh, that's not exactly true, unless it's the beginning of their career (or student artists...lol). That's the general stereotype though. I guess he didn't want me to starve. The look, though, implied that smart people did not become artists, for whatever reason. If smart people don't do it, then who does?
