Sometimes when you say, "Have you tried Googling it?", people get so offended for some reason. lmao
They come off all defensive and say something like, "WELL, I ALREADY TRIED GOOGLING IT. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP."
On top of that, sites like
http://lmgtfy.com/ are really sarcastic and can anger people. haha
So say you're in a discussion and you say a word/concept someone doesn't understand, do you tell them to look it up in the dictionary or do you have the courtesy to provide the definition for him/her?

To me;
If it doesn't take long, such as the definition fo a word, or if they're asking you I explain it then.
If the answer is too complicated, I will say "I cannot explain it very well, try searching it up and that might give you a better answer."
The purpose I would use LMGTFY for is if someone is pestering me for an answer (that I already stated "I do not know") in an obnoxious way - they could search it up themselves if instead of bugging me for an answer I do not have.
I myself would be a bit offended if they just told me to look it up in an arrogant way :shoe:

I wouldn't use lmgtfy.com since that adds most of the sarcasm. But if the exact question being asked can be typed into google instead and provide an adequate answer I'm not going to do the work for them.
When someone talks about something I don't know and it's a serious discussion either I don't participate or I google it.

If it takes less time to google than it does for me to answer, then yes, they should stop being lazy and lrn2google.
I have gotten asked some of the most simple things that could have been googled/wiki'd/whatever and solved within seconds instead of them wasting my time (and making them look stupid) by asking.

I can't answer that. Why don't you Google it?

Questions like the one in this thread require an explanation, one that is harder to find via google.
But simple questions like "what is ____" or "what year was _____" is so damn google-able that I want to punch their face when they ask it.
Earlier in kotaku discussions someone said "I always hear people say DotA DotA DotA! But what does it actually stand for?"
Someone did the lmgtfy and he got pretty upset about it.
But its true. All he had to do was google it.

I'll link to dictionary entry or paste the dictionary entry usually... and I don't tell people to google something unless it's really really stupid and easily google-able. Like "What is Bieber's last name?" or "What is wikipedia?"

Yes, yes I am. It is a long fanciful tale magic, mystery, melodrama, and vampires(jk no vampires).
in all honesty though I usually just google it myself seeing as how most of the people around me seem to type extremely slow. And google is ur friend.

I just think people overuse google. To the point where people just expect you to use it if you don't understand the smallest thing, instead of explaining it to you themselves.

Probably because it's faster to google it yourself, instead of depending on others to answer it for you. :P

What's wrong with humans relying on each other for answers instead of computers?
....And then the Matrix begins u.u
By the way I google just about everything I come across that I don't know xD But never in the middle of a conversation.

Well, if you can't find the answer you are looking for yourself, then you can always turn to someone else. That's when it's acceptable to say Google it, I guess.
Besides, it makes people less willing to help if the person looking for their answer did not try at first before asking. And in most situations, when they actually try after getting their complete answer, they'll realize, "Oh, was it that simple?"
