Chose something that you will be playing most games for. The last thing you need is to run out of games relevant to your interests for that game console.

If money is not a factor to you at the moment, why not buy both consoles?
For a more serious answer, buy one that has the best game exclusives for you (which, in my opinion, is the PS3). People, including your friends, will change as their interest will change, and inevitably, your interests will find a difference with your friends. And that will determine your personal value of the console you purchased, and it's more likely the value will be different between the two consoles.
Basically what Strawberry said.

Xbox has more American exclusives.
PS3 usually has more Eastern ports (which I like)
If I remember correctly.
Only reason I would get a Xbox is because most of my friends have it. But other than that I use my PS3 for MAG a lot :P

I'm not going to buy BOTH consoles because I find that as a waste of money whereas I can spend it on something more important and necessary.

well, arguably, >buying a video game console isn't a waste, while buying two is.
But anyways.
I'd say the PS3 seems to be more reliable (red rings, yada yada.)
I had a PS3 for a day (LOL I REALLY DID, GOOD STORY HERE), and the only thing that I didn't like was at the time, there were no games for it, but these days a lot of 360 games are for PS3 as well, like FFXIII.
Basically...
If you want multiplayer/social aspect = 360.
Better software, less disc hassle, blu-ray player = PS3.

I would suggest going xbox more than PS3. Most games are playable on both console, but most foreign games (Japanese) become PS3 exclusive since Japan hates Xbox :[ But also most of my friends play on the xbox more than PS3, paying the yearly online service. Most of my friends that own PS3 bought it for the free online gaming but they cant afford games :v
I find it alot fun interacting and chatting with people on Xbox more than PC (PC got bunch of quiet people that rather type)
Xbox = FPS games, XBLive Online interaction.
PS3 = Just to play exclusive games (mostly JP RPG)

I say PS3. PC is GREAT but it cost money for all the graphic card upgrades and memory and stuff like that.
