I'd suggest that the mods give a warning that the signature is too big. If it isn't changed within a day or so many hours, then a mod changes it themselves. If that's too much to ask, then they can just change it themselves.
That's what rules are for. That just opens a whole line of arguments that we don't even want to have to deal with. There are upper limits set and those are the upper limits. We aren't going to set some iffy barrier and say "Oh, well if it's within 15px of this range" or "25px of this range.." "50px of this range..." You see? Where does it stop?
There are limits for a reason, and they're going to have to be enforced. If someone needs help with their sig, there's a thread for that.

Honestly I don't see why this is bad.
Not much different from school rules about skirts.
Before our sig rule was "just make sure its not too big", as the skirt's rules would be "just make sure its not too short".
And then ambiguity happened.
And then schools would be like "skirt needs to be at least X length" to completely remove all problems involving a public display of underwear in a educational environment. If something feels wrong, you just take a ruler to it and go "you broke the rules, this is 2 cm too short".
Besides, having a guideline to work with helps mods feel less demonized.

But it really isn't difficult to have any images you wanna use resized. We even have a thread for it, and I've already resized like 5 gifs for people.
So, really, this isn't like a We'll kill you if you don't do this. You all have ample opportunities to fix signatures.

You sure? Because what I got from reading your post was Enforcing the rule to a T is silly. So I just said, No, it isn't, because it's easy to adhere to the rule to a T.

I was implying that it's unnecessary to measure sigs
that's like walking in school with a skirt on and you think it's following the rules
and then they stop you to measure it, and it's like an inch too short/long o;
But that's completely avoidable if you know the length requirement! For instance, the rule my schools had said that skirts had to reach below your fingertips when standing with your arms relaxing at your sides. If they were any shorter, you were sent to the office to call your parent to bring you something else to wear.
So, to avoid that, all you have to do is see if the skirt is long enough before you buy it. You try it on, and if it isn't long enough, you pick a different skirt or go get it lengthened at a tailor somehow.
Same thing applies here; to avoid having your sig be too tall, you try it on in the preview. If it's too tall, you resize it or pick something else to use.

We are not going to measure total sig size, 300px is the maximum allowed, that's just an estimate. Assume each line is 15-20px , that gives you 2-3 lines of text /whatever after/before your main image, that's probably as far as any of us will measure the maximum height limit.
What it is going to be "measured" (Hi digital age, it's measured automatically with 2 clicks - and resized with 3 -) is the 250px height limit.

Having gray area is what causes problems. Setting a straight up rule helps mods and also prevents unnecessary drama and double standards.
No, a few extra pixels won't cause the browser to crash, but it sure as hell won't break someone's back to trim it off, either.
