Read the novels here
Trailer, as well as summary to the story :

It's a lot better than .hack in my opinion. In addition, if you were to argue over originality, the original web novel for Sword Art Online predates .hack. Anyway, if you're enjoying the anime then I'd highly suggest you try reading the novels, as for any anime that's based on a novel, such as Index. Though if you're enjoying the anime as it is and don't want to be spoiled on what happens next, then that's fine to. For the most part they're keeping very true to the novels, and whatever changes they make barely affect the main plot at all.

Another series like 1/2 Prince and Yureka. I hope it gets an anime, I eat this kind of thing up.

Hopefully there will be more interest in translating it once the anime starts airing. In the mean time, I guess we can be thankful that they translated volume 3 and onward, since Volume 3 takes off where Volume 1 left off.

Their argument for placing Vol 2 low on the priorities list seems to be that it's filler. Which is kind of good since it's more about the MMO aspect of the novel and less about the story.

I just read volumes 1, 3, and 4 two weeks ago...
And if there's an anime adaptation, that'll be interesting.

It actually has a manga. http://www.batoto.net/comic/_/comics/sword-art-online-r1360
Manga that no one wanted to translate for more than a year...
Anime must include episode 16.5 yes? yes?

Heard about this a ways back. Since I don't read Light Novels I can't say I'm all that interested right now though it is on my plan to watch list.
Anime will be done by A-1 Pictures.

Slightly off topic but when the Anime was annouced, Accel World also will also get an Anime. Another light novel by the same author of Sword Art Online. It'll be done by Sunrise.
Edit: Also, this should probably be moved to Anime&Manga section.

AFAIK, no one has bothered translating AWO's light novels. The manga seems to have a following, but I've been putting it off because they're supposedly different settings. Lack of Asuna is discouraging

Pretty late in posting this, but for anyone interested the anime is going to air around July this year. A little more info has been revealed, such as the roles for Yui and Kirito, which means they're also covering the filler novel. I'm assuming they're going to also do the Fairy Dance novels since they have a VA listed for "Riifa", which I'm guessing is "Lyfa".
I'll edit the first post and ask for a move to the anime and manga section later after I get home from school.

>Haruka Tomatsu for Asuna
NOOOOO
>Ayana ****keyasu for Lyfa
Dead on arrival.
>Kanae Ito
I have nothing against this particular Seiyuu, but I was expecting someone much more... cuter for Yui
Dammit, they ruined the female cast. Kirito's seiyuu did a nice job as Narumi for KamiMemo, could have been MUCH worse, waitan on that Heathcliff announcement, here's hoping they give it to Takumi Hamazaki, i just CAN'T picture anyone else voicing him.

Music by
Kajiura Yuki.... Awesomesauce.
If you don't know who that is, which would be mindblowing if you didn't, she did music for series like Magical Madoka, Tsubasa Chronicles and Pandora Hearts.
Sacchi ;_;
Still ranting about the female cast, damn I hate those seiyuu so goddamn much.
Also Kajiura is on board now, if she does her magic like she did with .hack//ROOTS this series will be the thing of legends, judging by the trailer, shit will be GLORIOUS.
Ah yeah, don't click that spoiler if you haven't read the novels, you have been warned
