I've read through Vol 6, and I have yet to start Vol 7 (past the prologue, at least), and the story is intriguing. The execution isn't quite perfect, and the writing could have been better (the novelist seems inexperienced - or he didn't plan to continue the story). I'll leave the rest of it for later (although I've heard Alicization is pretty good).
As for the show, I have absolutely no idea why they're having the Liz story next.
Doesn't the entire Dark Repulsor story ruin the dual-wielding surprise? The entire point of it was to be a surprise, and the side story was meant to be an explanation in hindsight, not foreshadowing for the future. Then again, that's how I feel about much of the chronological animation (i.e., Scilica, the guild, and the "assassination" stories before the main story begins).
Just a bit disappoint. It's okay, though, since Asuna <3

I dunno, for someone who doesn't know the story and setting...
The black sword could be seen as a dark elemental weapon while the white one as a light. No matter how powerful your Dark sword elemental weapon is.. it's not good if it's attribute "could" heal dark type ennemies, having a secondary weapon to change could always be a viable option. I don't see how Kirito having a new sword been made spoil dualweilding at all. Heck in the episode with the dragon tamer girl, one of the bandit had dual axes... If dual axes is possible, I don't see how far dual sword could be. Atleast from a "person who doesn't know the story" point of view.

Ah, I guess that could make sense. I do feel as if, however, the show has been missing quite a few details (whether due to time constraints or simple overlooking) about the world of SAO in general. (semi-spoiler mode activate)
The largest example being how there is such a distinction between the high-level "frontliners" and those who lag behind. While there has been some time devoted to explaining how different factions of players have risen, not much time has been spent at all explaining many aspects of the world. This includes how static SAO is; although it is expansive, there is hardly anything outside of the norm that isn't governed by the system. People don't have unique skills - what you can do is limited solely to what the system lets you do.
Having the second sword being revealed early on coupled with the lack of deep exploration of the world ruins the surprise, I feel. "Oh, so he has another sword," followed by "Well, that twin sword thing was obvious, since we saw him get a new sword earlier on" doesn't have quite the impact as "Oh my gosh. He has twin swords" followed by "So that explains it all." It's just my opinion, though :3
^ It took roughly less than 10 minutes to find out the main character could dual wield from reading the manga. I don't think there are even 10 chapters out for it.
I didn't even realize it was that much of a surprise since I never read the LN.

Is it really like that? I've read about 3 pages of the manga, which seemed to be a bunch of Kirito shouting "ASUNA!"

The whole dual wielding thing was revealed in chapter 5 I think.
There wasn't even a mention of the white sword prior to that. The only reference to it were the covers I think. I thought the reveal was really lame to be honest, it was all "Oh no. Asuna is in trouble so I'll just take out a second sword when I should have been doing that all this time."
Not to mention the incredibly abrupt 2 year time skip after the 3rd or so chapter =.=

Well, the whole point of not showing it off prematurely was to avoid people begging him how he unlocked it. As for the time skip, it's covered by the side stories that were written after the main story (the manga must be following the same written order as the novels, while the show is just plowing through chronologically).

So I finally went back to reading the novel. Finished Vol 3... So...
...why is it still called SAO?
Cause the SAO incident is the begining of it all.

It should have been a sub-title instead... *Insert Main Title*: Sword Art Online.

I hated Vol 3-4 sooooo much. Suguha needed to shut up for approximately 90% of the entire story. Actually, considering the length of the show, I think they might actually animate Vol 3-4 (which I will equally hate).
SAO remains prevalent, so there really was no reason to change it.

The author had intended for the story to be just SAO, yet it ended up becoming something more than that.

He probably didn't expect for it to be an huge hit and he ended up having to keep writing.
That's pretty much the exact reason, he wrote SAO concluded it in one novel and didn't expect to continue it at first, and when it became a hit, had a hard time thinking of how to continue it. One way that was obvious was side stories. Then later ALO was born, which he stated somewhere that he had help from some people (fans maybe or friends not sure who) with suggestions of how to continue the story.
And I enjoyed episode 7, was some cuts but seemed mostly to prevent too many direct spoilers at this point in time. I just wish they didn't cut out the part with him using his sword to help break the fall down the hole. Was still decent without it though.
This should conclude the side stories for now, Yui's will come later obviously, so onward to the main story. I'm looking forward to it :D

Ep7... meh.. at least it was better than Ep 5 and 6 minus the lack of Asuna.
Next episode... Time for some fucking plot progression.
