  I'm just glad they didn't try to squeeze this side story in ep5 into a single episode it wouldn't of been possible, but :D we got to see one scene animated that I was waiting for, the one in my new Sig and Avatar.

  Except an EMP doesn't affect something that runs on a battery. Rather to be specific, Kayaba could have created the NerveGear with a special kind of battery that is resistant to Electromagnetic Pulses. One such example would be certain car batteries. In this scenario, it's likely that triggering an EMP would result in everyone getting fried.
  
  Another possible way that the NerveGear would be made resistant to an EMP is the use of special materials that protect against an EMP. A basic example of this would be Metallic Shielding. Keeping in mind that the technology during SAO's timeline is ten years ahead of us and how Kayaba is a genius who had planned this entire fiasco out, he would have used some type of futuristic method of shielding against an EMP of that era.

  Looks like the first non-side story ep apart from ep 1 will be ep 8. Of course it could be referring to Kirito's [SPOILER="Spoiler"]Dark Repulsor and Elucidator[/SPOILER] but I doubt it. Too early.
