  Of course this isn't SAO where if you die you really die, but still the consequences of dieing in ALO are there. Yes one is getting sent back to your home town, which isn't that bad but can still become annoying considering how big the world is. A death Penalty we don't know exactly what this does lose of exp, or maybe lose of some progress on skills. And you also lose some items from your inventory.
  
  And if a Leader is killed you lose 30% of the treasury for the entire race and tax their territory for a limited time. And in this case could also break the alliance the Cait Sith and Sylph was planning to forge, and could cause a war between them.
  
  This was all in the anime and seems more then enough of a reason if you enjoy the game to not want to die, without a need to role play.
