Driver issues.

  I ran the hard disk check and it just opened a blank message box after finishing. It has a close button, but...totally white inside. Can I assume that means I'm not screwed?
  
  System file check finished...there's like 15+ files that couldn't be repaired. Is there any easier way to replace them than manually typing several commands into the prompt for each one? If not, I'm gonna need some dinner first.

  As for what the filesystem check did I can't really tell, never seen it come up blank.
  
  The files listed as corrupt in the system file check don't appear to be critical/system ones that would affect this issue, but give the system a restart anyways and then re-run it to see if it comes up with the same issues again.

  Windows files are modified during updates/patches (and not just service packs), mismatching file versions to what windows expects could cause even worse issues, which is why the built-in repair tools (SFC and/or a windows repair install) are suggested so the system itself can verify what's what.

  A Windows "repair install" basically overwrites the OS without touching anything else, in theory. In practice, the results are often half-assed and I'd never do it on my system.
  
  Dunno how Macs are really. OS X is based on the FreeBSD kernel so they've got UNIX-grade reliability there. But there is more to the OS than what its kernel is based on. And Windows' kernel these days is rock-solid as well. Macs do have inferior security, however... contrary to popular belief.
  
  If you want life to be easier, keep backups of your data and install a fresh copy of Windows Vista (preferably from a source with SP2 already applied) after formatting your drive. I'd also suggest creating a separate partition for your documents and whatnot, so that C: can be just used for the OS and some other software that you can easily reinstall after a disk format.
  
  Or you can be more pro and keep a backup of your disk using disk image software. This makes it possible to restore the OS + programs quicker, but there are more setup steps involved. Osayidan is a big fan of this method (as are professional organizations) so I'm sure he'd gladly help you if you were interested in this. Feel free to take a look at PING.

  The repair install changed with Vista/7, it's not the same thing as it is on XP. It leaves accounts intact and everything, only some things need to be reinstalled (mainly things with kernel/system hooks of varying types, AV, hackshield, stuff like that).
  
  Yoorah's right, Macs are less secure nowadays, though Apple's scrambling to try to change that now that they can't ignore it any longer.
  
  I vote for the dual-partition option.
