McLEAN, Va. — Federal prosecutors in Virginia say they have shut down one of the world’s largest Internet file-sharing sites, Megaupload.com, and charged its founder and others with violating piracy laws.
An indictment accuses the company of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated films and other content. The indictment was unsealed Thursday, one day after Web sites shut down in protest of two Congressional proposals intended to thwart the online piracy of copyrighted movies and TV programs.
Megaupload.com has claimed it is diligent in responding to complaints about pirated material.
The indictment says that at one point, Megaupload was the 13th most popular Web site in the world.

SOPA and PIPA haven't passed yet. This isn't good.

This is like a giant blow to the face ._.
If they shut down MegaUpload, imagine all the other major sites we use that would be shut down.

This is pretty bad but at the same time, it has perfect timing...
This "sacrifice" will just help demonstrate how retarded SOPA/PIPA will be if they pass.

Sorry, not really sure what the complaint is. While Megaupload was great for getting free stuff, that's the problem. The fact that you were getting things that you should have payed for. How many of us have used megaupload for legitimate reasons? I know every time I've used it has been to download a movie, manga or anime.
Shutting down sites, like google, or youtube, that's would be the negative effect of SOPA/PIPA because these are legitimate sites that shouldn't have to regulate content violations.
Now don't get me wrong, SOPA/PIPA are horrible examples of legislation because of the broadness of sites it could effect. But steps should be taken to try to curb the amount of piracy that is rampant on the internet. Besides there's still bitTorrent.

MegaUpload is used for more legit reasons than you think. Some Minecraft mod makers use MegaUpload to distribute the files to the players for one example.
