How would you go about the combat system? One of the biggest obstacles to making or breaking an MMO is the combat system, and it is also what keeps people interested in the game (outside other features).
Hm... for mine....
I would have an aiming reticule. But depending on your aim and where you hit a monster (Armor, weak points, skin, cloth, etc) would depend on the damage. Shields whether from another player, or yourself would block attacks until it breaks. Every attack would do a certain amount of damage to the durability. Armor/Clothing would also have durability that decreases when attacked. In a sense armors/clothing/shields have a set amount of HP. Depending on the quality/upgrades of said item. Getting hit too many times in certain places would slowly cause that area, say a leg or arm, to become unable to be used. If carrying a sword + shield, either ditch the shield and use the sword in the other hand or use the shield to bash enemies. Getting hit repeatedly in an area would over time cause more damage. If a person is standing in front of you with a shield, any spells/attacks headed towards you will be blocked by the persons shield in front of you. But they have to be directly in the spell/attacks way.
Make sense? :what:

I would probably do something closely related to what most fighters do. Implement a block, grab, certain attacks, some special bar that allows you to do some stuff and skills for certain types of jobs to do. Something like warriors have the ability to have superarmor for the price of movement, archers have the ability to move faster, magicians have the ability to cast magic faster, Chuck Norris to roundhouse kick people for a OHKO and other things.
Or I just give everyone the ability to summon Jar Jar Binks.

I would make an mmorpg with the S4 league engine.

I would quit because it is hard to satisfy MMORPG players nowadays.

hm....I think the combat system shouldn't have to be the only thing to determine how great a game is. If I were to create an MMO I'm going to have to create other systems around the combat system that would make the player not care how great the system is compared to others.
About your system...aiming for different parts would be quite difficult if its real time action, as supposed to some sort of turn based combat. In the heat of battle players might not care where they hit, as long as they do. Its even worse when there is multiple people around. You kinda make it sound like a shooter so to me, wouldn't players aim for the head?

1st point: That is why I said besides other special features in parentheses.
2nd Point: Well yeah, but if the enemy is wearing a helmet and moving around, this would make aiming for the head a bit difficult. I wouldn't just have monsters sit there and attack you, I'd have em scripted to find ways to kill you. Whether it is charging, evading, etc etc

If the enemy is being so evasive wouldn't it be way easier to just go for the body and be done with it?
Should aiming matter if I'm melee'ing an opponent?

Yes and no. The body is most likely going to be the most protected part, and breaking down the armor is going to take longer then aiming for an opening/weak spot.

It doesn't matter as much as opposed to a higher ranged class. Most would just slash slash slash, but if you carefully go about where you hit then yeah it matters. If you look at Kingdom Hearts when you just melee, you don't just sit on the ground. So if I put in a target system like that, where you can jump and throw your sword but its all focused on one spot then aiming matters. For ranged though there would be no targeting system, just the aim of the individual player.
So
Melee = Something similar to KH
Ranged = Aiming reticule

So your telling me you can throw your sword, AND manage to target a body part? In real time?

Hiccup wrote on 2010-06-30 02:24
I'm just saying what it would be like. Not some huge ass sword but ya sure why not. With the help of magic anythings possible *cough* /cheesy line
Weapons would have weight, depending on the weight would vary your attack speed.

Would your sword magically come back or would it ly on the floor leaving you weaponless?
Could that be done with one special sword? or any?
