Regarding the first question you asked about pets,
it might seem like a little, but here's some things you might have forgotten:
If you've ever played Maplestory (shudder), pets are limited to 90 days, and then they expire. Kaput.
You're buying a pet that is permanent.
It might also seem like a really short time (above an hour, below two hours), but you don't really need the horse out the entire time.
Only use it for travel. If you think about it,
getting on a Haflinger or Shire might take about 2-3 Erinn hours to get from Tir Chonaill to Dunbarton.
2-3 Erinn hours is roughly 2-3 minutes in real life.
You still have a lot to spare.

xD Well, there you go.
And all pets you buy are like normal characters you make.
They're permanent unless you delete them, and you can even play as your pet. It can also rebirth.

xD Sadly, yeah. Nexon is a money-hugger company.
Like most people, I'd probably never rebirth my pets.
Unless I'm changing that pet into another pet.
Just imagine having a strong, old Mini Bear, and then rebirthing it into a Sheep.
Superhuman Sheep anyone?

If you fail to rebirth your wolf into a sheep.
You get Sheep-Wolfs that can spam between Emain Macha and Dunbarton.

If you delete your pet, then you delete it. You won't get the card back.

If possible, buy two pets.
Any horse works, really; it just depends if you always have a friend with you or not.
If you don't, get the thoroughbred because it's fast and convenient.
Then get a bear (I suggest Mini Bear out of the three), and use it to assist you in combat.
If you can only get one pet, get a horse.
Horses start at Smash Rank D (I think), and they are also quick. They'll also help you through your travels.
All in all, training WM is never easy.
It's a grindfest that you'll have to toil through, and it'll seem endless.
But after you finish, it's like the greatest feeling ever. xD

The thoroughbred is the fastest horse and the pet with the fastest land speed.

I would recommend the broom, for travel in Iria... Since it can go pretty fast on land as well as fly.
