A Florida couple was on a weekend camping trip that ended in an airlift to the emergency room.
Steven Egan, 52, was hunting with his girlfriend, Lisa Simmons, in the northern part of the state when he mistook her for a hog and shot her.
"He saw a hog and thought he shot it and went to look for it," Maj. Steve Clair of the Flagler County Sheriff's Office told ABC News. "He heard her and thought it was a hog and just shot."
The mistake was not actually related to her appearance. Rather, Egan had earlier shot at a hog that continued to evade him. He reportedly instructed Simmons to stay at their campsite while he pursued the evasive animal, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office However, Simmons ventured away from the campsite, apparently searching for oranges that had fallen from nearby trees.
When Egan heard rustling in the woods, he fired in her direction without first making visual confirmation with his intended target. Instead, Simmons was struck in the legs by a .30-caliber bullet from Egan's gun. She was airlifted to the nearby Halifax Health Medical Center where she is listed as being in serious condition.
Authorities say they aren't planning to charge Egan in the accidental shooting.
"He was very sympathetic that he'd shot his girlfriend," Maj. Clair said. "It was an accident. I think it was just a violation of one of the cardinal rules of hunting which is you never shoot what you don't see."

Well, it's not like he killed her. If he wanted her to die and blame it on an accident I don't think he would have gotten her an airlift to a hospital.

Ouch! Hope she recovers and becomes fine, her boyfriend is stupid for shooting something without knowing what it was,he could've accidentally shot a young child! And at first when I read this I thought they were referring to his girlfriend as fat.

A random child........ out in the middle of the woods...
...and he told her to stay at the camp so this wouldn't happen. >_>...
They're both stupid.

She could still die seeing as she's listed in serious condition. Also, if he did it on purpose, he could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill or whatever else police can think up of.

He's just a really stupid hunter... you NEVER shoot something unless you can clearly see it and anything you could possibly hit if you were to miss. And I actually doubt his girlfriend will die, a .30 isn't that large and she was hit in the leg, which I assume was quickly bandaged to stop bleeding. But yes, he better find the couch very comfortable.

She should have stayed put, but then again it never would have happened if he didn't decide to become trigger happy all of a sudden.
Can't say I feel sorry for the guy.

Yes, because there are an abundance of children running around in the middle of no where!

Serious. Not Critical. The only reason I could see her having serious issues from a shot to the leg is if he hit an artery (femoral artery for instance) and she was bleeding out or something. Maybe an infection.

You have no idea...
Besides, this is about Florida, not Montana.
The point is, he lost track of his target and then shot at the first thing that made noise. He's an idiot. Frankly, I like to see them take away his hunting license. What good does it do to wear bright orange if people shoot at things they can't see?

While I agree what he did was stupid. The woman was stupid too.

They're both dumb, but he should have his hunting license revoked. You never shoot blind...
