I've noticed some users do this a lot when they post their opinions out and don't get the feedback leaning on their side.
You should think before you post and should be responsible for what you post and unless the thread is turning into a flame fest, it shouldn't be locked because people disagree with you.

This.
I've seen certain people do this.

Hmmm.
I'm not entirely certain I can agree with that - if you have the ability to create a thread, then you should have equal authority to close your said thread.
Since, you created it and all.
I mean, you can already delete your own posts ... which would just be another way to halt any and all future conversation in a thread.
It seems a bit petty to request your own thread to be locked, but any instances I've seen it been used have been as a direct result of people acting extremely unfavorably towards the thread creator. Not due to what someone might deem as "simple disagreements".
Then again - what I view as hostility may not be the same for you, and vice versa. I honestly can't say I see the problem, if a thread is locked - just move on. I mean, I guess if you really wanted to - you could make another thread trying to continue the topic of conversation that may have been present in the locked thread.
Of course, since it hasn't been even one hour since the last event transpired ... it's only a matter of time before someone publicly connects the dots (You aren't any Sherlock, I can tell you that). Which, of course, will be a [S]fun[/S] interesting sight to see (or rather, read).
Except it's the nation so majority of people disagreeing with you in a thread pretty much equals flame war incoming

I've seen it where said person posts an opinion which turns into a debate which is not favor this persons side and they just say
"Whatever requesting lock"
and I've done it too, but I don't do it anymore.
@Epipoop
I think once you post a thread that involves some sort of discussion, that thread isn't necessarily yours anymore, it's pubicly open for everyone to use and so you shouldn't be able to close it just because you don't like the way the thread is turning out.

Gah! How dare you defile my name like that D:
And I suppose, but I just find it to be a limitation your own creation. I mean, me personally.
I don't utilize said "lock the thread" function, because I just tend to let any threads like that die on their own.
Of course - if there are people breaking the rules, that's another story.
I merely wanted to give the input that the thread starter could just delete his posts ... or ignore the thread. So - there are many ways to circumvent the "I don't like how this thread is turning out" issue.
Requesting for a lock seems to be the easiest and cleanest method. Unless, something else was proposed and another solution was found. But alas, that's not entirely my realm to deal with.

Better lock this thread right now. Or we're going to hate each other 4ever.

Stops problems, really.

I think people should be able to lock their own threads.
However, if they seem to abuse it and lock 'em when people disagree with them
and it doesn't appear that people are getting passive aggressive, then rights should be revoked.

I don't see a case in which someone would want to lock their own thread that's not bordering on "abusive", unless it's a shop thread or something, in which case they can report it for a mod to lock.
Anything that has to do with "things getting out of hand" or "preventing flame wars" is still up to the mods to decide. Especially since I think we all agree that some members already abuse the please lock my thread option.

But it's all about thinking before you post especially if you know a certain topic tends to get more unfavorable posts.
I can think of about 4 people who would do this often
2 no longer come here, one hasn't done it for a while and the other does it on a bi-weekly basis
