Oh, I do spend a lot on some things, I just play the fuck out of them to compensate. Well, it's actually the other way around, I tend to play them a lot first and
then spend a lot. But right now, I have a lot of excess money (compared to how much I normally have, anyway, I'm definitely not rich) due to not spending practically ever. I've spent like $20 on a game in the past... I dunno, half a year? Not counting the $5 I spent to have a Blizzard authenticator shipped to me, and of course TERA tonight.
Then again, I pirate practically everything, from books, to music, to games, to professional programs... operating systems, videos... basically everything that is either not a physical object or is somewhat acceptable in digital form, on top of looking for deals on the physical things I buy.
If someone doesn't mind doing things that they "shouldn't", but are never prosecuted, only buys what's a good deal and makes them happy, and gets creative about spending... I'm convinced almost anyone could live a really great quality of life as long as they go into it with semi-realistic expectations. With the help in the internet, no purchase is really a shot in the dark anymore.
Even with physical objects, there are often tricks. Cameras can often have high end features that shouldn't be available added with hacked firmware. Headphones can perform like ones many times more expensive with a few simple modifications. Cars can be upgraded cheap and get huge performance gains relative to the cost. List goes on and on really.
If spending $100K on a game made someone $100K happier, I'd encourage them to do so. But it probably doesn't, lol. It probably makes them about $100-200 happier at most.

I would take those any day, because I believe in Matrix philosophy. People want choices, even fake choice, they are only happy when they have the illusion of choice and that's what free to play give me, choice of whether to buy or not while subscription force the fee on you, and that feels suppressing. One of the reason I like guildwar is because of the freedom of choice.
I agree with it but I don't really have anything of interest to say about it.
