I've discussed this with many of my friends over time.
I notice many people have a complete hatred for both genre but tend to give little reason as to why.
They'll just simply generalize an entire genre as being bad.
It's always along the lines of "drugsmoneywomen" which is silly. Things like that depend on who is making the music rather than the genre. If you actually look for lyricists/artists that put effort into making music then you'll find them.
For example, I don't like rock or any genre related to it because it's mindless screaming about violence and death.
See how stupid that looks?
This isn't actually how I feel, It's just an example of how uneducated some opinions can be.
Of course you'll think something is bad if you rarely listen to it and you judge based on the popular plays that are constantly on the radio and television. You basically develop an uneducated opinion. That's a short bit of my opinion of their opinions but I'm sure not everyone ignorantly hates for such a simple and silly reason.
Just to add, I personally don't care to put any music under a genre. It's just easier.
Music is music.
It would be different if it were something you just didn't have a taste for.
One of my favorites.

So what is your opinion?
I think this goes here since music is a form of entertainment.

Music has genres because some music is similar and some music is not. Saying music is music is like saying "liquids are liquids" and denying that orange juice tastes different from soda.
Anyways...the reason why there's so much hip hop/rap hate online, and in particular gaming forums, is because hip hop/rap is not aimed at that demographic. Trying to discuss rap with a gamer is like trying to discuss proctology with a teenager. Chances are they don't know wtf it is, or why they should care about it.
Personally, I'm okay with some rap/hip hop. A lot of it I dislike, because it's not something that resonates with me. I just don't like it. I don't find it good to dance to, I don't find it good to listen, and it rarely evokes good things within me. But, this is all on a song by song basis. There's people I can't stand (like Lil Wayne) but then there's rappers like Cee-lo who I go absolutely fucking nuts for.
I will admit, though, there's little that I like about rapping. Generally I'm not impressed by the flow or construction of most rap lyrics. Cee-lo is one of the few that I've found to be the exception. Oh, Biggie is also somewhat an exception for me as well.

Yeah you're right. I just have a hard to defining some things under a genre because of the many different sounds.
So I usually like whatever I like, if I can feel for something on a personal level as well as enjoy the way it sounds then I'll love it.
Cee-lo is really good, I first started hearing him when I found out what Dungeon Family was.
As for the demographics thing...I don't find that entirely true considering many people play games. I do get where you are going with that which is why I only said "entirely". Even so I still am interested in the opinions of people.

I like some grime and some of the older stuff, like 90s and early 00.
Some names of the top of m head are Wu Tang Clan, Gangstarr... uhm... there are definitely more, just none that I can count of the top of my head.
Grime:

A lot of it is really good. A lot of it is also shit. I generally prefer the oldschool gangster rap, like NWA and Snoop Dogg, but some of the newer artists are pretty good as well, especially Kanye West and Jay-Z.

I think you mean metal, when you say you don't like rock.
This is rock.

And to me, hip hop and rap are poetry, it's just, there are too many songs about sex, drugs, and drinking.

Yeah a I listen to a lot of older ones as well. Lupe Fiasco is also a new face that's pretty talented, I started listening to him back in 05 I think.

I agree with you Loki, I look at hip-hop and rap as poetry for the most part. Yeah there is a lot about drugs and sex but many genre have that.
If you listen to lyrics carefully you can find that kind of trash among many genre. It's often easier to hear it in rap and hip-hop due to the lyrics being so simple when it's that kind of stuff. It doesn't take much to understand slow shit talk. However, you can still find decent things if you actually care to look rather than just listen to whats promoted more.

That shiet doesn't qualify as music; they're just irritating noises.

I kinda love hip hop and rap. Third favorite "type" of music behind things that fall around rock/metal and electronica. I even like the drugs/sex/money theme. There's a certain absurdity to it that makes it fun, lol. If you try to take 50 Cent and some others 100% seriously 100% of the time it'll ruin the point. It's entertainment.

Like most, I'm fine with some and am annoyed by the rest. My taste in Rap/Hip Hop kind of varies, though. I like a few songs from artists like Cee-lo and Lupe Fiasco but on the other hand, I also like dirtier songs by artists like Missy Elliot, Snoop Dogg, Akon, etc.
Eminem is awesome as well.

Don't care much for other kinds, mostly because they don't pertain to me. I don't hate, but I do dislike some of the more mainstream rappers who all basically have the same songs.
